#5 | May 2020
May 2020 • Issue #5 • Chebeague Island Council Calendar
On the Cover Spring blooms all over Chebeague this month and even with the island staying safe with quarantine and social distancing, we can see the signs. This month’s cover features the daffodils blooming outside of the Island Commons, where some of our island’s most vulnerable and beloved members reside under the watchful eye of the dedicated and steadfast staff. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone on the island and missing the island this month. We will get through this together and see you all soon. Be safe and stay home. About the Calendar The Calendar is published monthly by the Chebeague Island Council. Available on-line at Chebeague Island News ( www.chebeague.org ) or www. islandcalendar.weebly.com and mailed to every occupied residence on the island, for a small additional fee, it can also be delivered by first-class mail to Island Council members who are off island at the time of publication. Island Commons
132 Littlefield Road Chebeague Island, Maine 04017 www.islandcommons.com
Administrator, Amy Rich 207-846-5610 commons@chebeague.net
A Shout-Out to Our Staff, Community and Resilient Residents!
All of us are adjusting to life during the COVID emergency, and the residents of the Commons are no different. Thanks to our dedicated (and creative) staff, the long days of quarantine and caution have also included some fun. Even the Easter Bunny paid a (remote) visit. Easter Sunday featured a festive breakfast and dinner, hand-painted cards and chocolate rabbits (thanks, Cat and Carly Rich), a scavenger hunt organized by our clever weekend staffers Tory Nevens and Victoria St. Louis, captured on video by Tory, featuring her dog Watson. (Check out the Commons’ Facebook page.) While family members couldn’t share in the festivities, the Commons has gone digital with Zoom conversations on iPads, on loan from the school. (Thanks, Bev Johnson and Chip Emery.) Care manager Christina Skillin and her team have become experts in preventive measures to keep the Commons virus-free, with able assists from our two M.D. board members, Jim Cox-Chapman and Kip Webb, who have spent hours with our staff providing support and expertise. “Well done!” emailed Kip. “We are all very fortunate to have your hands on the wheel.” An offer of an emergency grant from the Recompense Fund to help cover a portion of our rapidly rising expenses for personal protective equipment and supplies mushroomed over the course of 48 hours into an outpouring of additional donations from the community, announced via email with this heading: “We’ve got you covered!” (To all who generously contributed, our profound thanks.) Through it all, Administrator Amy Rich has digested scores of health advisories and technical recommendations, and Community Outreach Manager Nancy Olney has devised an elaborate
network of food and supply deliveries while both of them continue to oversee daily operations.
Other gifts, large and small, in recent days remind us all that we are extremely fortunate to be weathering this epidemic in such a caring and supportive community. And while most of us have the luxury of sheltering in our own homes for the duration, we all should give heartfelt thanks to the dedicated caregivers at the Commons who leave the security of their homes and families to travel to the Commons to ensure that our residents stay safe and healthy. They are “our heroes,” wrote an appreciative islander. We couldn’t agree more.

Island Commons Marty’s Memories – From A Coc on By Marty Trower
Memories are easily any time before now. Now being the strange, elastic, uncertain time of the pandemic. It’s here, skirting around us, lurking, but impacting every one of us in many ways. Most of us, whether consciously or not have built our own invisible but strongly felt cocoon. I sit, and I also roam within my cocoon. I talk on the phone and I have even FaceTimed. I walk with friends, fast and apart, and now, masked. The dog speeds up and pulls, trying to take it all in while she can. She inhales the thrilling outside world through her nose, whether in the air or in the ground. That’s her world and it lives within my cocoon. Spring doesn’t know what we hear on the radio and television and on the internet. It is just carrying on as we watch it happen as if in slow motion. I am interacting with my living space and hours of the day in ways I never have before. With patience, and introspection. I am still sorting through mounds of old
photographs, bumping into people and places once so significant that I want to unravel the intervening years. I find artwork, letters started, creative problem- solving projects still in pieces, all abandoned but all still breathing life. Often, I think I want to stay in my cocoon into the forever that it will take to resolve all that I have started in my life. I wonder if other people are experiencing similar issues. I wonder if we will look and act differently when we emerge from our cocoons. I hear of many positive things that have come about or at least been noticed and appreciated during this time. I have never grown seeds inside before yet here they are, little spindles of green bursting up through the damp earth in cardboard egg cartons. Will they really turn into cucumbers and arugula? Maybe all of this was just a particularly bleak mud season.

From the Town Office
From Marjorie – Here we are, staying at home on Chebeague Island. I know that it is difficult and sometimes there is conflicting and confusing information. Hang in there! I try to think about the positives. I know I have been taking advantage of the Food Pantry, especially for fresh fruit. I needed a small can of tomato sauce for a recipe and they had exactly what I needed! I’m trying not to go to the mainland at all. You can leave a donation or not. It is there for all of you. I’m not going anywhere, so please call the Town Office (846-3148) or my cell with questions, 207-975-3074. There is a lot of information out there, but it is OK to still have questions. I’m very happy to report that Chebeague Transportation Company will transport all of our E-911 patients. They will transport people with suspected COVID-19 symptoms that have to go to the mainland for a test or with other instructions from a medical provider, but this will be on the CTC barge. You should call their office for instructions.

If you have questions about recycled materials, please ask the attendant, Gail Jenkins. Thank you for your efforts. Please call the Town Office for information. We have installed a drop box outside the Town Office door for tax payments and any other paperwork you want to drop off. Thank you for your support and remember to be kind to one another. This is especially important during these trying times. I know when our lives are turned upside down that tempers sometimes flare. I know I have had days when my mood is just sour. Try to stay positive. I try to think of how lucky I am to be in this community. Be well. Stay safe. Marjorie E. Stratton, Town Administrator
Please follow the Maine Centers for Disease Control guidance. If you are sick, stay home. Call your medical provider for instructions. If you have an emergency medical situation, call 911. For those of you that have to travel to Chebeague from a different location, you must follow the Governor’s mandate that you and your family members self-quarantine for 14 days. That means you don’t leave the house for 14 days. You must bring enough food and other supplies for those 14 days. It means that you can’t go to the dump or the store or the boatyard for 14 days.
Quarantine means that you stay in your house for the entire 14 days. Don’t confuse quarantine with the Stay-at-Home order. Town Office Closed – The Town Office is closed to the public until further notice. By emergency act of the State of Maine Legislature, registrations for motor vehicles, all-terrain vehicles (ATV), watercraft and dogs issued by the municipality are extended by 30 days after the end of the public health emergency. The CIHS is hard at work on the upcoming exhibit: Growing Up on Chebeague. This is Chebeague’s con- tribution to Maine’s Bicentennial Cele- bration. We are having so much fun!
Although we can’t be sure right now when we will open because of the virus, we will be ready when that time comes! The photos and artifacts that have been shared tell the story of a community that has valued its children and has instilled a sense of place over the
generations from the CivilWar to today. The sea, shore, woods, and fields of Chebeague are the backdrops for seasonal activities that showcase creative play! www.chebeaguehistory.com
The evening’s lecture will be given by Michael Porter on the history of American mapmaking, using historical maps of Chebeague as examples!
The Recompense Fund
The Recompense Fund Board is keenly aware of the significant disruptions in our lives, the scope of which will likely be unparalleled in our lifetime. We understand the needs of our island nonprofits may be changing dramatically, and that some organizations may need to re-think both long- and short-term plans. Key RF Board members are aiding the Town’s Covid-19 task force. Others are stepping up to enhance our island’s communication channels. Our Board members offer “extended arms” in this hour of need, and each of us would welcome any calls for support.
The Recompense Fund Board, in light of Covid-19’s impact on island nonprofits, acted April 13 to relax the expenditure requirements of previously granted, unexpended RF funds to any Chebeague nonprofit. This includes allowing the use of said funds for operating purposes as authorized by any recipient’s Board of Directors. Recompense also would like to remind you of the availability of emergency $500 grants submitted by a letter of need. Additionally, early grant applications are welcomed now and due by May 15 with final grant applications due May 31 st .
