ANNUAL REPORT Fire & Rescue
2018-2019 was a very exciting year for the New Gloucester Fire & Rescue (NGFR). The NGFR continues to evolve to meet the service needs of our great community. We are constantly reminded of the delicate balance of service delivery and organizational wellness. In 2019 the town accepted the resignation of Chief James Ladewig after two years of service. In the transition the town hired an interim, Chief Sherman Lahaie. Chief Lahaie was able to help transition to a per-diem schedule during the day time from 6 am to 6 pm seven days a week. If a call took place in the evening it’s answered from members living in the community. This can be a challenging experience with New Gloucester having fewer living in the response area. The NGFR is currently in a different position with funding and staffing. Several hours have been spent with the selectman and town officials. After looking into possible contracted services, your vote kept the department within its own community. The town stepped up and offered solutions that allow for our services to extend its future within its current organizational structure that meets the demands of the Emergency Medical Services and Fire Suppression. In March 2019 the department hired a new chief. Chief Toby Martin who brings to this position over 25 years of Fire/EMS experience. As the NGFR expands, the department must progress to meet continually changing needs. This brings the expansion of service delivery adding coverage 24/7 at the paramedic level and having members cross- trained for community response. The department will look to improve the organization. We plan to develop employees’ skills with cultural awareness, education while maintaining community involvement. At the same time, we will continue to develop our operating standards, experience, equipment, while trying to recruit members in the community to support operations. As we grow within the community, we see unlimited potential in many areas. This is truly an exciting time for the NGFR. We look forward to leading the people within the organization and serving the community. We are proud of the work we do and are thankful for the support we receive from our community. We want to thank everyone who helped make 2018- 2019 a safe and successful year!
