Valentine Shopping Event! Saturday, February 8, 1:00-3:00 With special gifts for special valentines

Some High-Tech News for Island Commons and the Community Thanks to several major grants, the Commons is about to go high-tech, installing new broadband internet service and purchasing updated computer equipment and operating systems. This represents a significant investment in our operations, but one which is long overdue. It will vastly enhance our ability to serve our residents, staff, visiting caregivers and the entire Chebeague community. Our current system is outdated, overloaded and no longer reliable. The Commons has contracted with Consolidated Communications to install a fiber cable along Littlefield Road to our facility. This project was underwritten by grants from the Maine Community Foundation and the Island Institute, with additional funding provided by a gift to honor a former resident. Installation of the new line is scheduled to occur soon. At the same time, thanks to a 2019 grant from the Recompense Fund, the Commons is also purchasing new computer equipment and operating systems to replace aging equipment that is no longer secure or adequate for most daily tasks. The new system has been designed to meet our specific needs by Systems Engineering, a respected Portland IT firm. While these major improvements will significantly improve the operations at the Commons, they will also enable us to share our faster internet speeds with the Chebeague community through a public hot-spot, educational programs, special events and teleconferencing. We are grateful to all who made these critical investments possible and look forward to sharing our good fortune (and high speeds) with our many friends on Chebeague.

Island Commons Marty’s Memorie - Meandering By Marty Trower

Donna Damon gave us all due warning…find your old pictures of youthful summers on Chebeague and get them to her by sometime in January 2020. The next exhibit at the Museum of Chebeague History, about growing up on Chebeague, is counting on us. Did she know what she was doing to the population of unorganized, sentimental pack rats and hoarders among us? I missed the deadline to get my photos in. They are still sprinkling each and every surface of my three main rooms; we are of course eating on our laps in front of the T.V. I’ve enjoyed the challenging process of going through these visuals, though, and found that I wanted to stay with the many subtle memories they evoked. Maybe that’s what held me up, why I couldn’t find the pictures I was looking for and I digressed. I felt the distance in the years not just from how the people had changed but from how the land around our family cottage, my present year-round home, has evolved. In one early Chebeague photo, my older sister and I are squished into a wooden swing seat. I remember that it was painted green like our house behind us and that I found that same seat years later in the shed with the frayed rope still attached to it, wound around its middle. The shed is gone now and the huge oak whose branches held the swing has disappeared forever over the bank. Jen looks protective of me; I look leery. I wonder now, did the swing swoop out over the bank? There is no front lawn now. There are no longer any stairs coming down from the house to the path of grass. There isn’t any room for them anymore. The edge of the bank is a few feet from the edge of the porch railing. The few remaining birches of those many that once stood along the shore with their extended family, glowing white against all adversity, it seemed, linger quietly now, gathering in the early orange fuzz of light.

In a later picture, Dad has started to hack through the overgrowth to the cottage from the dirt road to the house. There is lawn now at the back of the house and down what could be and will be a driveway much later. The job was always a kind of an artistic endeavor for my father, sculpting the property out of a tangle of forest. When they got their first car on the island, my parents parked it at the top of the property. So did anyone who visited or dropped you off or picked you up. One night I was in the back seat of a car full of teenagers and I was being dropped off. I was trying to get out of the car but couldn’t because there were tree branches being fed into the open windows of the car! Everyone was laughing and giggling hysterically. It was my father, returning from a night meeting in the neighborhood, using his pile of branches to make sure we were behaving ourselves! Now a real, though rugged driveway slices through my father’s prided lawn and forest and loops around a transplanted hydrangea. A neighbor’s driveway skirts the edge of the property in what used to be woods and orchards, I think, from the Soule farm. I brought an apple tree back to life there a few years ago and though it struggles today, l still hope to see it blossom in the spring someday. It could be that being here on the island all year long I am more aware of trees being companions you take for granted because they’re always there. I realize now that that is no longer true. Thanks to friends, many of the blown down and uprooted trees have been turned into firewood but their stubby trunks and gnarled roots snake into the frozen air, questioning. I want to look underneath the ground to see what is coming next and hope there is enough good earth to nurture the new growth. So, that’s what happens when you start looking at pictures from the past, you can even get transported to the future. And that’s just two photos, Donna.

A big thank you to the Chebeague Rescue, the Islander boat crew, and the Yarmouth Rescue for rushing me to the Maine Medical Center on December 11th. Thank you for all the healing thoughts and prayers and well wishes as I recovered. We are so grateful to be living in the Community of Chebeague. Diane, Hartley, and girls

We have a lot of new faces since then, so we will start running that piece again begin- ning next month. Use the Bus! All customers are welcome to wait for the ferry on the bus. Independence is in service !

As our year-round cus- tomers know, the new year brought the new boat. The Independ- ence went into service on January 4th. The crew spent several days training on her and performing safety drills before she began transporting our pas- sengers. While there are many similarities to the Is- lander, there are also several differences. Perhaps the biggest difference is the size of the wheelhouse. Cap- tains have a great line of sight to the float while docking and can run the boat from ei- ther the port or star- board side. Overall, the crew is pleased with the new ferry and has become very comforta- ble running her. The Islander was hauled at Royal River Boatyard where she had her biennial Coast Guard hull inspection. She will be there for several months while Maintenance Manager Mary Todd and her crew work to give her much needed “love” (as Mary would say! ).

A Tribute to Martha Hamilton Doughty Who Made It All Work A decade ago, when she was serv- ing as president of the CTC board, Martha led the search for a new general manager. When the board voted to award the job to Carol Sabasteanski, Martha volun- teered to help with the transition. She never left. Martha quickly decided that the job of office manager was a lot more fun than being CTC presi- dent so she agreed to become wingman for Carol -- and, while she was at it, occasional deck- hand, cruise organizer and the friendly voice on the other end of the phone when customers called. She modernized payroll and rec- ords management, organized mainland and island employees, learned maritime, labor and envi- ronmental regulations, helped CTC become a non-profit, solved untold conflicts, and unraveled the mysteries of barging sched- ules. Martha answered a million ques- tions from first-time travelers to the island (“How do I get to the wharf?”), located lost groceries, gloves and even a few kids, jug- gled the delivery of vans, trucks and construction materials, reas- sured worried wedding parties, read the riot act to rule-breakers, and in all ways, demonstrated

CTC’s commitment to serve the Chebeague community day in and day out.

CTC has grown over the years and Martha has played a strong leadership role in that growth, tending to the myriad of details that allow our crews to perform at peak efficiency and our customers to enjoy safe and dependable ser- vice. Now that CTC is running smooth- ly, Martha thinks it’s okay to de- part. She plans to help husband Nathan with his island enterpris- es, spend more time with her dogs -- and she will continue her criti- cal volunteer work as part of the Chebeague Island rescue squad.

For Martha, 10 years on the CTC team have gone by quickly (some days faster than others).

On behalf of all of us at CTC, and everyone who depends on CTC’s services, thanks, Martha.

The delivery date of the Inde- pendence has been changed by Washburn & Doughty due to delays in construction of other boats at their yard. The estimat- ed launch date is now 6/21 at 2 PM.
