Community Matters
Ann Kirkpatrick, Chebeague Island School Superintendent
Christin Nadeau, Administrative Assistant
By now most of you have had a chance to meet our new School Administrator, Ann Kirkpatrick. Ann has been involved in school administration for many years, most recently as the Principal in Vinelhaven. A graduate of Hebron Academy, Ann recieved her Bachelors Degree from Springfield College in Massachusetts and a Masters Degree from University of Maine, Orono. For the last 25 years Ann has lived in the Belfast area and comes to Chebeague on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. She is able to stay with family in Brunswick before heading back to Belfast. Ann enjoys many outdoor activities, especially curling, and is the Belfast curling community’s representative to the United States Women’s Curling Association.
As Administrative Assisant, Christin is here every day to help keep the Chebeague Island Community School running smoothly. Sitting just inside the door, right at the front desk, she is the “go to” person for all things school related. Christin, her husband Travis, and sons Ben and Lucas moved here just over a year ago. They were living in Lisbon Falls and had visited friends on Chebeague for many years. When the time came to consider a move, Chebeague seemed like a perfect fit for their family.
Ann is finding the Chebeague Community School warm and friendly, and appreciates the exceptional skills required to teach in a multi-age classroom. She says her door is always open. Stop in, say hello, and ask Ann about her Hamilton Family connection! The Wellness Center with a MaineHealth Nurse Is Open for Blood Draws, Blood Pressure Checks, PT/INR Testing, Medication Setup, Dressing Changes, Christin spent much of her childhood in Maryland where she attended Community College, focusing on Early Childhood education. Over the years she has held a variety of office management positions and worked at Kids Place before accepting the Administrative Assistant position at the School. Christin is very happy to be a part of the Chebeague Island Community School team. As far as we know, she is not related to the Hamiltons. But you never know...

Marty’s Memories - Listening to Our Storytellers by Marty Trower
Sometimes you don’t know when it’s happening to you. When you are caught in a moment - or twenty- when a tale unravels. Sometimes I get to thinking about what I should be or would like to be doing elsewhere but not anymore. Now I stop and remember. I remember Ed Jenks- was he over a hundred then in the sixties when he was telling Lee Bowman and I this story? That he had been part of a crew of soldiers and/or civilians who went to clean up after the massacre at Little Big Horn out west. Custer’s Last Stand. We were sitting in his simple kitchen with a great view out onto the water on the west end and the flimsy curtains were pumping at the partially opened window. A still but sometimes gusty October day. I don’t remember him revealing details but Classified Ads Top Shelf Cleaning and Services: Cleaning, moving cars to and from the Stone Pier or Chandlers Wharf, snowplowing and snowblowing, and winter house watching—daily, weekly, or monthly—lawn mowing, and light tractor work. For more information, call Cindy at 207-846-1055. Seasonal Rental at 13 Island View Rd: Fully equipped summer home with 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, and private right of way to the water; $1100 per week plus a $300 security deposit. somehow the story was believable. He knew exactly what he was talking about as he moved easily into the politics of the day. The Viet Nam War. Another massacre, he thought. That was at least fifty years ago, that memory. For the past couple of weeks, Ernie Burgess has come over to cut up and split my two huge trees that fell in the Great Wind of October 2019 (my name for it). Over the last few days we have been sitting around my kitchen table while we waited for his cutting machine to warm up. Only I didn’t know that part until the next day. In the meantime, Ernie’s many intriguing stories brought us back to The Cuban Missile Crisis and his close-up encounters with that near nuclear war. Those led to others and soon I knew I was sitting across from a master storyteller.
Notices Ladies Aid: Please join us for crafty projects and camaraderie at 11:00am each Thursday. Catholic Communion Service: A regular Catholic Communion Service will be held every Saturday at 4:00pm at the church. CHEBEAGUE TRANSPORTATION COMPANY What’s New at CTC?
2019 In Review
At their 12/19 meeting, the CTC Board voted to implement the following policy effective 1/1/2020. To support island-based non-profit organizations, CTC offers the following benefit. The organization will be charged the current resi- dent rate for ferry trans- portation for persons trav- eling on business to or from Chebeague under the following conditions: The organization establish- es a charge account with CTC. A charge log will be kept on the ferry. The passenger traveling on business for the non-profit must complete the charge log on each passage. CTC will bill the organization monthly for all entries in the prior month. The organization agrees to pay for all entries on the log at the current resident rates. If a passenger signs the log by mistake, the organization must collect the fare directly from the passenger or from another organization. Please contact the office for more information. Business Office: (207) 846-5227/846-3700 16 North Road, PO Box 27 Chebeague Island, ME 04017 chebeaguetrans@gmail.com chebeaguetrans.com In 2019, we added four new employees. We are pleased that the follow- ing people joined our team — -Scott Martin recently moved to Chebeague and is training for the Office Manager posi- tion. -“Butch” Charles lives in Portland and is a part-time deckhand. - Jack Uminski lives in Falmouth and is our Saturday after- noon/evening bus driv- er. - Paul Chesley rejoined CTC as a bus driver in January. Welcome back, Paul! Welcome to CTC! Annual Parking Permits 2020 annual parking permits will be mailed by the end of Decem- ber. Unfortunately, we were unable to issue permits for the Cousins Island lot to all who applied. Please remem- ber to affix your 2020 permit to your vehicle right away. New Employees in 2019
CTC’s gross income fell from of 2018 levels. This is a result of our ferry ridership being 8% less than last year, as well as less barging. -We continued to provide free rescue services to the Town of Chebeague Island. In 2019 we made dozens of patient trans- ports . Many of these occurred off hours -- often in the middle of the night. We also provided free transport to the Sheriff’s De- partment -- day or night. -We purchased the office build- ing at 16 North Road in May. It is an ideal location for the crew and offers sleeping quarters for our mainland-based crew mem- bers who spend the night on the island. -We were disappointed that the Independence was not delivered on schedule. The year saw many trips to East Boothbay to
monitor the progress -- especial- ly by Captain Matt. She will be home soon and we are confident that the Island will enjoy our new ferry. -Captain Matt was promoted to Marine Operations Manager. Matt has direct responsibility for the boat crew. Captain Jere- my is assuming the routine maintenance that Matt per- formed. Captain Beth has been promoted to Safety officer. Many thanks to our customers and to our great crews on the water and on the mainland that keep our operation running smoothly 365 days per year! The third person who calls the CTC office after 9 AM on 1/6/2020 and says “When do the cruises on the Independence start?” will receive a free guest ticket book.
The following pricing increases will go into effect on January 1, 2020. Except for the adult and child round trip ticket, the fare increases are at 2020 Ferry Ticket Pricing Changes
or below the infla- tion rate since 2011. The resident and child ticket books will be an annual rate—we are eliminating seasonal adjust- ments. The reverse commuter ticket gets very little use so we are eliminat- ing that ticket type.

Please be advised that there could be a several minute delay in the transmission of the data, so do not rely on the AIS to give you the vessel’s exact location .
