This year’s performance is entitled “Carols Present & Past” and is being directed by Ben Yosua-Davis. Arrive early because this popular show fills up fast! There will be cider and treats served up, plus a generous helping of Community Love. Come enjoy the sounds of the season with all your neighbors, friends and family! Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12. About the Calendar The Calendar is published monthly by the Chebeague Island Council. Available on-line at Chebeague Island News ( www. chebeague.org ) or www.islandcalendar.weebly.com and mailed to every occupied residence on the island, for a small additional fee, it can also be delivered by first-class mail to Island Council members who are off island at the time of publication. The Calendar welcomes submissions from its readers, including letters and thank you notes, but it cannot publish anything that is political in nature, libelous, or obscene. All submissions should include the author’s name and contact information. Without exception, the deadline for submissions is noon on the 20th day of the month preceding publication. Notes From The Hall

Our Wednesday soup program is off to a great start owing to our faithful soup sippers and longtime soup crew headed by Ruth and bolstered by Ester, Deb, Jackie, and Wanda as well as newcomers Sharon, John, and Sarah. Soups for December and January are sponsored by Norma and Jeff Drew, your new neighbors on Cottage Road, who report that they are “souper” excited to join the Chebeague Island community. Of course, all the regulars are flocking to Susie’s Wednesday coffee hour for a cuppa Joe, a pastry, and the latest news. You may have noticed that the outside of the Community Center is now looking like new, with the trim repainted and the siding in place. Next spring

Erin will be landscaping the Hall sides of the building, and we can’t wait: no more scraggly crabgrass, sad bike rack, and drifts of gravel. As a reminder, please don’t let your children bike in the gulley between the boulders along the road: this practice damages the landscaping and creates a danger for passing motorists as the kids pop unexpectedly onto the road. This month the Hall plays host to the Whalers and school’s annual holiday party. We expect Lisa and her crew will once again transform the space into a winter wonderland. The Hall board would like to thank the community for its loyal support and wish you all a happy December!

We continue to do better with our recycling. Eco Main reports that we are down to 2% contamination. Not perfect, but very good. Tax Bills – Tax bills were mailed recently and the first half was due September 30th. If you have any questions, please call the Town Office. The tax bills are based on the owner as of April 1, 2019.

Chebeague Island Historical Society News

The Historical Society wants to tell island stories through the eyes of its children. The one thing we all have in common is childhood so if you spent any part of your childhood–year-round or summer on Chebeague, the Historical Society hopes that you will share childhood artifacts and your favorite Chebeague childhood picture so that it can be used in the 2020 exhibit, Growing Up On Chebeague . We are also looking for childhood photos of your ancestors. We plan to have a wall with favorite photos and sections of the exhibit showing birthday parties, picnics, sports, working, boating, fishing, playing, fashion, island weddings, holidays, church and school programs, theater, and many more topics. Photos with toys, costumes, etc would also enhance the exhibit. We can scan your photos and return them or you can scan your own at 1200 TIFF and send it to us. Exhibit deadline for submission is January 15, 2020. We hope this is our most inclusive exhibit yet, but we need your help!

Marty’s Memories - The Gray by Marty Trower

The first time I saw the island in the early winter, the initial difference I noticed was the gray. The gray of the water. It was no longer softened by the dense green of the trees, no longer its bouncy blue color, whipped by wind and tide. It was still and metallic as were the trees limbs. They stood naked and twisted and reaching. I didn’t recognize them at first. Did they know me? I asked to be dropped off near Hamilton Beach where our family summer cottage was. I immediately went to the shore and found the majestic Big Rock, exposed at half tide. I pulled myself up onto its barnacled surface to take in the whole experience. The air felt heavy and I sensed a touch of loneliness. The ducks and gulls didn’t know I was there and went about their business at the edge of the water, which fascinated me. There was no-one else around, no people and no dogs, just birds muttering or squawking at each other. Would I have noticed the contrasts of grays in the plumage of the birds if the sun had been out and the gardens blooming?

I was in art school at the time and I suppose I was learning to see in different ways, but this day, this

time of wonder when I first saw the grays- I learned how to stop and look and listen.

I remember now, very early in school I asked my first- grade teacher how to make the color gray. My uncle Bruce was a pilot and he had taken us up in a small plane and we flew over and around Montreal. I only remember a dizzying view and then throwing up and upsetting everyone. My teacher told me to mix black and white together and then add a little bit of blue. I resumed drawing a picture of the plane, the best part of the time being its metallic gray and I wanted to make the color myself. I am living on Hamilton Beach now, year-round, and the long gray season has begun. I often think that the words ‘gray’ and ‘nuance’ say so much and mean so much, the possibilities endless. I will always be grateful to Chebeague and art school for prompting me to appreciate the subtle beauty and stability of everyday life.

The boat has been sea trialed and performed well. As of today (11/19) the builder is working to complete the certifi- cation process for the Coast Guard. The Islander will undergo her biennial hull inspection in January. Our plan is to dry dock her for the winter and put the Independence in service. Service Cancellation

While CTC recognizes that many people rely on our service to get to school or work, we must always consider safety first. Please re- view our policies below and use one of our communication chan- nels to stay informed about ser- vice interruptions. Bus Service: If school is can- celled in Yarmouth, the first bus of the day is automatically can- celled. There will not be a notice of this trip’s cancellation. Any other trip cancellations will be communicated as soon as possi- ble. Ferry Service: When making a decision to cancel a boat trip, we will consider not only the ability of the boat to run in the storm, but also our passengers’ ability to safely board the boat. There- fore, conditions where the wharves, ramps, and/or floats are unsafe will result in a fer- ry trip cancellation . This would

include; high winds making the floats rock dangerously (usually at Cousins), storm surges that put the top of the Stone Wharf under water, and excessive ice and/or snow on ramps, floats, or wharves. When adverse weather conditions force CTC to consider cancelling a ferry and/or bus trip, the company will make every effort to notify our customers as soon as possible. As soon as the decision is made, the information will be posted to the CTC’s website and Facebook page. An email will also be sent to Chebeague.org for posting. Emails and texts will be sent to those who registered on the can- cellation page of our website to receive notification. CTC intends to make the decision as soon as possible and post it at least 60 minutes before the sched- uled trip whenever possible.

The delivery date of the Inde- pendence has been changed by Washburn & Doughty due to delays in construction of other boats at their yard. The estimat- ed launch date is now 6/21 at 2 PM. The Independence will have to undergo sea trials and required testing for regulatory approval. Therefore, it is uncer- tain at this time when the Inde-

pendence will be home and able to carry passengers. We are planning a launch party at W&D in East Boothbay and are hopeful that many Islanders will be interested in joining us for that event. CTC will provide bus transportation to the launch. As plans are finalized we will post the details.

We are pleased to announce that CTC boats (Islander, Independence, and Dovekie) will all have Automated Identification Systems (AIS) installed. The Islander’s AIS is operational now—the Dovekie’s will be working May 1st. You can track their location at www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/shipid:442737/zoom:15 or down- loading an App. Suggested Apps will be posted on our Facebook page. Please be advised that there could be a several minute delay in the transmission of the data, so do not rely on the AIS to give you the vessel’s exact location . During the first or second week in May, Bartlett Tree will spray the Route One lot for brown-tail moth. The spraying should be completed before the first bus of the day. The spray may get on vehicles but it will not damage the paint. Customers are urged to park in the center rows of the lower part of the lot to minimize exposure. As soon as we have a definite date, we will post it. However, it would be prudent to park away from trees beginning the end of April. Deck the Halls (and the church!) – Saturday, November 30 th Get into the Christmas Spirit by helping ready our sanctuary for Christmas. We’ll decorate on Saturday, November 30th at 4 PM with a potluck dinner following (around 5). There are jobs for people of all ages and abilities, so please join us! Discernment Sessions – Sunday, December 1 st and Sunday, December 29 th Save the dates for these next two sessions for helping us discern our congregation’s relationship to the wider United Methodist denomination. New Sunday School Program – Sunday, December 1 st Kids in grades 6+ are invited to join us for a new Sunday School class just for them! Join Melissa in the sanctuary at 9 AM on Sunday mornings for re:form – an experience in Christian practices and conversations in a fun, collaborative way. Cheryl Hillicoss will continue with Deep Blue Kids for all ages up through 11 that meets in the Parish House on Sunday mornings at 9:45. Gingerbread House Making – Sunday, December 8 th Unleash your inner architect with a family-friendly creative event on Sunday, December 8 th ! From 3 – 5 PM in the Parish House, construct your very-own gingerbread house and cap off the evening with a potluck meal at 5 PM. Prizes awared in various categories for your gingerbread creation. All are welcome! Christmas Pageant – Calling all Kids! This year’s pageant will be on Sunday, December 22nd and we need the help of our island children to tell the tale of the very first Christmas. We have parts for kids of all ages (even the littlest!). There will be a brief rehearsal on Saturday, December 21st in the morning (precice time TBD). Christmas Worship Services: Save these dates on your calendar to celebrate Christmas with your friends and neighbors at CUMC: -- Saturday, December 21 st , 5 PM join us for the Longest Night service, a meditative service acknowledging the tension many of us feel during this time of year between joy and lament. Find peace in the quiet and comfort of others. -- Sunday, December 22 nd , 10 AM Our island children tell the story of the first Christmas! -- Tuesday, December 24 th , 7 PM Our traditional Christmas Eve Candlelight Service.We remember the story of Jesus’ birth, sing carols, and share the light of Christ with one another. Advent Calendar for Climate Change Count down to Christmas with your friends and neighbors at CUMC with an Advent Calendar we created to raise awareness around climate change and to increase our gratitude for God’s creation.
