Notes from the Council
The Chebeague community spirit is most present in the quiet, generous acts of so many volunteers. From Wednesday soup to our terrific firefighters and rescue crew, what makes life here “work” is this willingness of so many people to help. With summer coming, the pace of life on the Island picks up and the demands on these volunteers increases accordingly. Please consider reaching out to any of the island organizations to see if there is something you can do to help. Thank you to everyone who gives of their time and effort to keep our community the strong and vibrant place we are all happy to call home.
T he U.S.M Student Nurse Health Clinic was well attended, and the donuts disappeared quickly. Membership letters have gone out. If you did not receive one, please let us know and we will send one to you. The Council depends on this community support and we hope we can count on your continued membership. Please send in your ideas for the 4th of July Parade theme by May 15 th ! You could win a private shopping experience at School House Seconds. We have had some great ideas come in, but no decision has been made - it is not too late to come up with a fabulous theme for this island tradition.

Marty’s Memories: From Off Shore by Marty Trower
You would think that we would have enough of water, crossing over it on the ferry as much as we do. For most of us, though, it isn’t, and we somehow work out a way to get out on it as often as possible. Where else could you go to slow down enough to notice the foaming gurgle of a wake behind you, or an expanse of nothing, a vision so calming that it lifts you up? I remember that being on our wooden cat boat in the fifties was often a languid affair. Her beam was wide and heavy and the yellowed canvas sails never fully billowed out. We didn’t move fast or far but sights were seen, and stories were told as we sat in the baking sun, the boat yawing and creaking. Once, right off east end point, someone looked up and over towards the mainland and alerted us all to the appearance of Mt. Washington, off in the distance. The majestic image was a momentary thing; we had to tack, I think, and when I looked back to see it again, it wasn’t there. I was always hoping to see that mountain again but that turned out to be my moment.
weren’t around. The most thrilling was what we later called the Ginna Toohey on a Buoy story . Apparently, over the years, Ginna, a co-owner of our boat, kept saying, whenever they went past a certain red bell buoy at the end of Whaleboat island, “I’ve always wanted to get off onto one of those,”. It drove the others nuts. Sure enough, someone finally called her bluff and they put her off on the bobbing, splashing thing and sailed away. The sailboat, being a slow and unwieldy one, took it’s time to come about and had to go down behind the island to do so. Meanwhile, another boat came up to the buoy all in a panic seeing no other boat around, shouting to her,” Just hang on, we’re coming to rescue you! “. They just wouldn’t believe her, that she was fine, really, her friends were coming back for her, really. I have a black and white photo of this event, of Ginna on the buoy, and I drew a picture on a card I made for her on her 75 th birthday. Neither capture the energy and excitement of being out here, salt water spray drying on your face, enthralled by the water and all the memories it holds.
During the slow times we listened to stories from the grown-ups of things that had happened when we

The delivery date of the Inde- pendence has been changed by Washburn & Doughty due to delays in construction of other boats at their yard. The estimat- ed launch date is now 6/21 at 2 PM. The Independence will have to undergo sea trials and required testing for regulatory approval. Therefore, it is uncer- tain at this time when the Inde-
pendence will be home and able to carry passengers. We are planning a launch party at W&D in East Boothbay and are hopeful that many Islanders will be interested in joining us for that event. CTC will provide bus transportation to the launch. As plans are finalized we will post the details.
Where’s the CTC Boat?
We are pleased to announce that CTC boats (Islander, Independence, and Dovekie) will all have Automated Identification Systems (AIS) installed. The Islander’s AIS is operational now—the Dovekie’s will be working May 1st. You can track their location at www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/shipid:442737/zoom:15 or down- loading an App. Suggested Apps will be posted on our Facebook page. Please be advised that there could be a several minute delay in the transmission of the data, so do not rely on the AIS to give you the vessel’s exact location . During the first or second week in May, Bartlett Tree will spray the Route One lot for brown-tail moth. The spraying should be completed before the first bus of the day. The spray may get on vehicles but it will not damage the paint. Customers are urged to park in the center rows of the lower part of the lot to minimize exposure. As soon as we have a definite date, we will post it. However, it would be prudent to park away from trees beginning the end of April. Friday, May 3 rd – Finnan Haddie Dinner! Join CUMC at the Parish House on May 3 rd from 5 – 6:30 PM for a Finnan Haddie Dinner. (Don’t know what that is? Finnan Haddie is smoked haddock). Cost is $7 per person, $25 maximum for a family. Proceeds will benefit our growing Sunday School program! Saturday, May 18th – Mandala Rock Painting with Linda Carleton— Linda Carleton will be coming out to the island on Saturday, May 18 th from 9 – 11:30 at the Parish House to do a workshop on how to do mandala rock painting. Cost is $3 to help cover paint and materials. (If cost is an issue, please speak with Pastor Melissa). Feel free to bring a few of your own rocks to paint (rocks should be about two inches in size, smooth, and slightly round or egg-shaped), or we’ll have some to spare at the Parish House. Food Pantry Items — Our food pantry is always in need of donations (both monetary and foodstuff) to help our island neighbors. Some items that we find get distributed quickly are: products with low/no salt or low/ no sugar, nut butters, gluten free items, and decaf and regular coffee. Next time you’re at the grocery store, pick up an extra item or two to donate to your island food pantry! (As a reminder, we are unable to distribute items that are open or expired). Miss a Sunday in Worship?— You can always visit our website at www.chebeagueumc.org and click on the link to read Pastor Melissa’s recent sermons. You can also find out what’s going on by checking out the church
calendar or our curren events page – all available from the front page of our website. Reconciling Congregation Discernment Process— To live more fully into CUMC’s vision and mission, our congregation is taking steps to become inclusive of every person who comes through our sanctuary doors. As part of this process, we’ll have several opportunities for learning and conversation about how to be inclusive of our LGBTQ sisters and brothers.
In May, we will have two more open conversations in the Parish House – a time for questions, sharing, and listening. These dates are: Sunday, May 5 th at 3 PM, and Wednesday, May 15 th from 7 PM - 8:30 PM. We will also have a question box in the Parish House, where anyone can drop a question about what it means to be a Reconciling Congregation, how this decision will impact the community, or anything regarding this process that will help you understand the issues. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Melissa, Jackie Trask, Karen Corson, or Polly Wentworth.
