Notes from the Council

T he tele-medicine equipment has arrived, and we are looking forward to having the community come and try it out. You can check your blood pressure, weight, oxygen level, and pulse. You can video chat with a nurse and arrange to have your information shared with your primary care provider. The Council is seeking guidance from the community as to when the best time would be for the Wellness Center to be open. Please email us at chebeagueislandcouncil@gmail.com or leave a message at 846-4988. The Council is evaluating the use of and call for services provided at the Wellness Center. We would like to continue to offer dental services through the Tooth Protectors Program and need to know whether at least six people would like them to return. Dr. O’Donnell has come

for the past three summers and is willing to return, but few people come to see him. We are wondering whether this is a good use of our resources. The twice-monthly visits from the MaineHealth nurse are popular, mostly for blood draws, PT/INR testing, blood pressure checks, and advice. Perhaps we should look into increasing her time here during the summer? Our flu clinics and health screening clinics are usually well attended, as are our foot care clinics, keeping Dr. Rybka very busy. Health care needs seem to be an ever-moving target. As we move toward more technology-based services and quick care clinics become more numerous, the Council will be evaluating which services are most used and what direction we should be headed. Dental Clinic

How long has it been since you had your teeth cleaned? The Council would like to continue to sponsor free dental clinics, but needs to be sure there is sufficient community interest to continue. Please contact the Council at chebeagueislandcouncil@gmail.com or call 846-4988 if you are interested in keeping this clinic active. The clinic is by appointment only and has room for up to 8 patients.

Recompense Fund News

Visit us this summer to see the additions we are currently making to our popular exhibit, “Chebeague & Maritime Enterprise”.

The Recompense Fund is poised to respond quickly at any time to the immediate needs of all Chebeague nonprofits through its special small grants of $500. Submit a

single-page request at any time and expect a quick decision. Applications can address emergencies or unexpected opportunities. Simply email your request letter to recompensefund@gmail.com. Now is also the time to brainstorm and prepare larger grant requests. Grants awarded in 2018 ranged from $1,500 to $15,000. Generous donations from the Chebeague community have made it possible for the fund to offer substantial support once again in 2019. Check the fund’s website at www.recompensefund.com . The Recompense Fund is dedicated exclusively to Chebeague. It is a fund with the Maine Community Foundation.

Office Hours— We are open Monday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. As always, if you need assistance at other times, please don’t hesitate to call (846-3148) and we will do our best to accommodate your needs. From the Planning Board— Maintaining your home fuel oil tank is an important way to help protect Chebeague’s aquifer! An annual oil-tank inspection increases the chances of avoiding costly problems for you, the aquifer, and the environment! When replacing your tank, consider upgrading to a double-wall tank to increase longevity and reduce risk. You should upgrade your tank if: • It’s weeping, patched, or repaired—review for evidence of “saturation” metal by oil or patching • It’s not stable or well supported; in others words, inspect the legs • It fails an ultrasonic test or is too rusty to test • It has an unsleeved feedline in concrete—that is, if the oil feed line running from your tank to your boiler or furnace is encased in your concrete basement floor and is not coated in a material such as plastic. For information regarding potential financial assistance, contact Katie Wilcox at 553-5913. Budget Workshops— The Board of Selectmen are beginning to work on the 2019–2020 Budget. If you have a proposal to put

before the Board, please contact the Town Administrator. Tax Bills— The first half of the tax bill was due September 28, 2018. Interest at 8% began to accrue September 29, 2018. If you have any questions, please contact the Town Office. Dog Licenses— Please come in and license your dog. The last day to register without incurring a $25 late fee was January 31, 2019 . Transfer Station Hours— The Transfer Station is open Wednesday and Friday afternoon from 1:30 to 4:00 and Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m. The Transfer Station is closed Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Please remember that this is a pay-as-you-throw facility. RECYCLING NEWS!!— Be aware! Ecomaine continues to charge us for contaminated recycled materials that are sent to them. Contaminated items are basically garbage that gets in the wrong container. The last container we sent to ecomaine included 3 full bags of trash, 20+ empty plastic bags, styrofoam trays, egg cartons, and a large suitcase! If you don’t know which items are appropriate for recycling, please ask the attendant or check the side of the recycling container for information. Marty’s Memories: Hamilton Beach by Marty Trower

I try not to think about change too much, but sometimes it’s good to just stop and look at it and acknowledge it. The thing is, I love Hamilton Beach just the way it is now, but I remember it other ways too as it has evolved over the years. The most exciting vision comes not from my own memory but from a jerky 8-mm movie that my father took at a picnic with his teen- aged cronies on Capps’ Point. The almost grownups are sitting and standing and milling around a campfire built into the rocks. They are batting away the smoke, moving to get away from it. There is no sound, of course, but I recognize a young Jack Zaugg sitting, beaming up at a young woman who just might have been Mary (“Meow”) Capps Stelle. He is flirting like crazy and very happy. The most extraordinary part of this clip is the quick flash of a view of the majestic, gleaming white Hamilton Hotel off in the background. I never saw the hotel, but I heard so much about it because my father spent his summers there from the time he was a young boy until World War II.When the war came, the grand place had to be torn down because visitors were unable to come and the owner couldn’t pay the taxes. The guest cottages remain and are summer homes now. I’ve heard that one of the outbuildings was removed and taken to the Harmon property on Soule Road and is now Michael and Barbara Porter’s home. The hotel was a fancy place noted for its dances with music provided by a live orchestra, tea parties, and a large front porch where older ladies sat and bobbed in rocking chairs, looking out over the beach. My grandmother, apparently, was one of them. A long wooden pier extended out from a walkway from the hotel, and guests strolled and sat on benches, admiring the prize tunas caught by anglers from sports fishing boats. My father sailed and horsed around with other summer kids whose families and descendants still come to the island. Most were in cottages near or around the beach: the Beeches (Fred Martindale), the Hubbells (Rich and Liz), the Harmons (Michael Porter, Mary Cushman, Maggie Bossi, and Norah Alper), the Cookes (Rozzie Read), the Zauggs (Alexandra, Mimi, and Renee), the Buxbaums (Don and Bob), Margaret and Polly Newell (Jack Turner), Steve and Mary Capps (Rosemary Capps Merchant), the Swanns (Sarah Van Fleet), the Gwillims (Sue Whitney Burgess, Lee Whitney, and Mark Gwillim), the Estabrooks, the Layngs (Joan Dayton, Brian and John Layng, Sue Bogle, and Sally Crapser) and the Moultons (Julie, Jennifer, and James Ragan). Gertrude Jones’ old cottage is still filled with photographs of the beach the way it was. My best friend Maggie and I used to go exploring where the hotel once stood. I remember finding rusting fencing, remnants of the tennis court, tangled in weeds. We used to swing from branches that draped over the sand and rummage around the exposed round brick well that served the hotel. A good part of the pier survived, upright pilings that gradually disappeared with every passing year. Today, only a few stubs of these pilings remain in the sand, to the left of John Layng’s house, and the odd brick from the well shows up occasionally, lodged in the sand at low tide. The sand has come and gone so often, it’s hard to keep track of it. The banking, where Native American middens expose thin, white bits of clamshells, still tempt us to look for arrowheads. I finally found one once, the beach-combing highlight of my life. Living in my parents’ cottage on the beach year-round now, I often wake up at night during blasting winter storms and wonder how I will find the shore when I walk the beach in the morning. As of February 15th, the CTC crew no longer pro- vides assistance to pas- sengers at half-tide or below. Assistance will continue to be available at half-tide and above when movement up and down ramps is safer for all. CTC is not denying ser- vice with this policy but restricting times when the crew will assist due to safety concerns for our crew and other passen- gers. In February 2018, CTC made a presentation to the Board of Selectmen regarding the safety con- cern with the current ramps. At that time, we urged the Board to in- clude in their 2018-2019 budget funds for evaluat- ing the situation. In September, we informed the Board that, despite our efforts to find a solu- tion, CTC was unable to safely assist in transport below half tide. We rec- ommended 80 foot ramps be installed. While a larger float would be a safety improvement as well, we do not believe it is necessary to address the access issue. As our population ages (half our residents are age 60 or older), it is becoming more critical that safety of access to the floats be improved for all residents.

In the past, we have had people jump onto the ferry while it was feet away from the float. The crew believes this unsafe practice must be prevented. Ferry Crossing During Storms: If warranted, the Captain will make an announcement and all passengers must be seated in the main cabin dur- ing crossing.

This month’s newsletter focuses on safety for all those using our ser- vices. Most of the items listed below are simple common sense practices intended to protect passengers and crew. Although these rules and recom- mendations are not new, it’s easy to forget or ignore them as we travel back and forth. Here is a quick reminder about guidelines to make everyone’s ride safer and more pleasant. On the Ferry -Passengers should not open doors or exit ferry until instructed by the deckhand. -Passengers in cabin should stay seated until the ferry is tied up. -Carts must be left on stern—not brought into the cabin. -Carts should not be placed on float in foul weather. -Passengers must stay off the float when the ferry is landing. -The crew will inform passengers when they can board the ferry (at Cous- ins). -Small children must be supervised at all times and not allowed on the bow or stern without an adult present. -Dogs must be leashed and under the owner’s control at all times. -Passengers must not lean over side of the ferry or sit children on the rails. - Jumping and diving from ferry are not permitted. -Access to the wheelhouse is by permission only. Upper Dec k -Access is restricted to certain times and trips during the summer. -No pets or luggage allowed on upper deck. -Both hands must be free to climb the ladder. -Passengers must face the ladder when descending from upper deck. On the Bus -Individuals and vehicles should not be behind the bus when it is backing around at Cousins. If the back-up signal is sounding—get out of the way! The mirrors have “blind spots” and the driver may not be able to see you. -Passengers are not allowed to enter or exit the bus through the back door. -Dogs must be leashed and under the owner’s control at all times (and kept off the seats). -Passengers should not move around the bus while in motion.

Lent Worship Series—Holy Vessels: Healing and Wholeness— Here on Chebeague we’re no stranger to seeing sea glass on our beaches—beautiful colors that are sought after by collectors, jewelers, artists, and beachcombers. Yet sea glass begins as something discarded, something broken. After it is tossed about by the water and refined by the sand, it becomes something precious and to be treasured. While we know that suffering is not necessary and that we are created as whole beings as God’s beloved children, when pain comes and we find ourselves lost and broken, it is not the end of the story. We will explore God’s healing and wholeness over the season of Lent using the metaphor and journey of sea glass. Our schedule of Lent worship services (Sundays are always at 10:00 a.m.!):

Sea-Glass Pendant Workshop— Please be sure to save the date for the morning of Saturday April 6 when Sharon Rent will be sharing a workshop on making wrapped seaglass pendants. People will have the opportunity to make their own pendants as well as extra ones for use in worship on April 7. Stay tuned for more details about this event, as well as for other opportunities for learning and fellowship during the season of Lent. Mardi Gras Pancake Dinner Tuesday Evening March 5— Join us at the Parish House for a community pancake dinner for all ages! We’ll have crafts for kids (and adults!) starting at 4:00 p.m. and running throughout the evening, with dinner starting at 5:00 p.m. Donations for this meal will be gratefully accepted and will be used for ministry expenses. Ash Wednesday, March 6— Ash Wednesday traditionally marks the beginning of Lent, the time of year we journey inward and reflect on our life with God. It is a day of prayer and repentance. We receive the symbol of ashes to remind ourselves that in the dry and broken places of our lives, God can bring forth new life. In addition to a worship service in the evening, Pastor Melissa will also be at various places throughout the island for you to receive ashes. She’ll be at the Stone Wharf in the morning from 7:45 to 8:00 and other locations to be announced.
