The deadline for submissions for the March issue is noon on February 20. On the Cover This month’s featured artist is Kaden Putnam. His multimedia design was created as part of a class project illustrating the idea of “no two alike.” The coming snowstorm had Kaden thinking about sledding, and his idea of “no two alike” is reflected in the snow scene and sleds. Five-year-old Kaden enjoys sledding and reports that the best place for sledding is the hill in front of the Inn. And in keeping with the class project, no two sled rides down that hill are alike! About the Calendar The Calendar is published monthly by the Chebeague Island Council. Available on-line at Chebeague Island News ( www.chebeague.org ) or www.islandcalendar. weebly.com and mailed to every occupied residence on the island, for a small additional fee, it can also be delivered by first-class mail to Island Council members who are off island at the time of publication. Notes from the Council
The Wellness Center with Paula Favreau, RN, Is Open for Blood Draws, Blood Pressure Checks, PT/INR Testing, Medication Setup, Flu Shots, Dressing Changes, Suture Removal, Wellness Checks, and Health Information No appointment needed. No charge for these services. Tuesday
After a delicious “Thanksgiving in January” Community Lunch, Steve Baybutt explained how tele-medicine will help increase access to health care here on Chebeague. MaineHealth will be providing the equipment, and the Council Wellness Center volunteers will be available to help you get started using this new tool. The equipment has been ordered, and Steve will be out here to get us set up as soon as everything arrives. You will be able to monitor important health indicators like blood pressure and blood sugar, talk “face to face” with a nurse, and keep your doctor informed of any changes in or concerns about your health. Watch for more information and details on Bev’s web site and social media. The Church, the Commons, and the Council are working together to start a trial Meals on Wheels Program. This has been done in the past and some of you may recall Bertha Grey delivering those meals! The need and the willingness to participate has fluctuated over the years. Several folks have wondered if it might be time to try it again. There are islanders who either are home bound or find it difficult to get out in the winter and for whom having a warm meal delivered could really make a difference. We are starting out small and space is limited. If you would like more information, please call the Council office (846-4988) and leave a message so we can call you back. The snow is coming, the roads are slippery, and getting the bottles and cans to Chandlers is difficult. Ann Thaxter and the Bagettes could use some help! Please call Ann (846-3274) or Ester (846-4178) to find out what you can do and, in doing so, help support Island nonprofits. Enterprise for Chebeague Housing Options (ECHO) Affordable housing remains a challenge in coastal regions of Maine, as noted on the Island Institute website: On many Maine islands, there is a shortage of affordable, year-round housing. This includes affordably priced homes for sale and rental units, especially those available for a full year rather than only in off-peak seasons. The effect of this lack of housing is to make attracting and retaining families— and especially the young residents of islands as they become adults—much more difficult. The lack of housing also provides a significant barrier to economic activity. It’s extremely difficult to find qualified applicants for year-round positions (e.g. school teachers or town employees) or even for summer positions (restaurant staff, sternmen for lobster boats, etc.) without affordable, comfortable housing units in which those employees can live. In the long run, an inability to offer quality housing to. . . the young families that provide island schools with new students could be an existential threat to the year- round nature of many of these communities. This excerpt makes clear why Enterprise for Chebeague Housing Options (ECHO; echo@chebeague.net ) has been founded on Chebeague.

Top 10Ways to Be a Good Septic Owner
Follow the system manufacture’s direction when using septic tank cleaners and additives Maintain plants & vegetation near the system to ensure roots do not block drains Use soaps and detergents that are low-suds, biodegradable, and low- or phosphate free
Have your system inspected every three years by a qualified professional. Have your septic tank pumped, generally every three to five years
Avoid pouring harsh products (e.g., oils, grease, chemicals, paint, medications) down the drain Discard non-degradable products in the trash (e.g., floss, disposable wipes, cat litter) instead of flushing them Keep cars and heavy vehicles parked away from the drain field and tank
Repair leaks and use water efficient fixtures to avoid overloading the system Prevent system freezing during cold weather by inspecting and insulating vulnerable system parts (e.g., the inspection pipe & soil treatment area)

Marty’s Memories: Embracing Our Kindness by Marty Trower
The Quaker meeting house I sat in while visiting Philadelphia recently was large and grey-walled. The elongated benches were padded with long cushions and were all facing inward. I was in the city with two old and dear friends from school in Montreal. We sat in silence for an indeterminable and exquisite piece of time. It wasn’t long before my thoughts wandered to Chebeague and the last time I sat in a pew there at our beloved Methodist church in October. It was the Sunday after KristinWestra had died, and Pastor Melissa announced that she would be spending the morning at the Parish House with the children who were grappling with the loss of their much-loved teacher. I had taught with Kristin for thirteen years and had not yet found a way or a place to cope with the stunning loss. I sat with my partner, Lock, who held my shaking hands tightly, and I felt warm and safe. Melissa’s husband, Ben, took over at the pulpit and devotedly ran back and forth to the organ. Ben, being the accomplished musician that he is, understood the 1 Candlewick Ln Cumberland ME 04021 207 829-5009 Eliza Jane Elizaadams78@yahoo.com 233-8533 Rock 712-5050 ALPER, Donald & Norah (Toohey) 21 Soule Rd 846-3234 Norah & Don nalper@comcast.net BALLARD, Andrea & John Aurbakken 497 North Rd 846-6035 874 State St Portsmouth NH 03801 703 469-1822 Andrea 409-7999 / John 703 589-5747 BERRY, Alexander & Caitlin Cronin 21 Island View Rd 846-0752 206 Colony Road Longmeadow MA 01106 413 567-0257 Caitlin C aitlin.cronin@gmail.com BROWN, Peggy & Scott McGovern 53 East Shore Dr 846-6356 252 Middle Hancock Rd Peterborough NH 03458 603 924-4226 Peggy pbrown252@earthlink.net 603 620-6521 Scott s cottmcgovern17@gmail.com CLINE, Nancy 9 Aarons Wharf Rd 192 Middle Road Apt 113 Falmouth ME 04105 207 899-2045 Nancy nancycline@mac.com 617 513-0917 COLE, Adrian & Kathleen McCann 403 South Rd 847-9270 Katie kathleenmccann@usa.net 522-7458 CROSS, Jaqueline (Buxbaum) 22 Buxhill Blvd 846-6120 317 NW Alana Ave Port St. Lucie FL 34986 860 280-6545 EATON, Bob & Deb Wallace 4 Lessing Rd 146 Stiles Rd Boylston MA 01505 Bob rpesing@gmail.com 508 769-1435 Deb Debra.Wallacepmp@gmail.com 508 769-1480 ELDER, Charles & Linda Elder 345 North Rd Chuck 400-4148 / Linda 245-8872 ADAMS, Betsy & Jeff Dieffenbach 381 South Rd 141 Pearl St Cambridge MA 02139 Betsy betsyadams@aol.com 617 721-9228 ADAMS, Eliza Jane & Rockland Helpin 391 South Rd
eloquence his music would bring. He read and interpreted the twenty-third psalm, which we had heard so often this past year in our community. It was thoughtful, provocative, and comforting. The choir sang, softly and compellingly. My hands stopped shaking. Then, a communion was announced. Most of the congregation participated in this ritual and wound their way up to the altar and around through the aisles. Two members, Donna Damon and Polly Wentworth, broke out of the slow-moving line to lean over and give me a hug. It was a defining moment for me that I will remember forever. At the meeting house in Philadelphia, I was taken away from this lovely memory when the first of many speakers spoke up and talked about the power of a hug.The speaker then mentioned how many people go without a human embrace and how important hugs are to the well-being of the human race. I couldn’t believe it. Isn’t this what is called serendipity?

CHEBEAGUE TRANSPORTATION COMPANY What’s New at CTC? Letter from the CTC Board
Congratulations Matt!
We are very pleased to an- nounce that Matt Ridgway has been promot- ed to Marine Operations Man- ager. Matt joined CTC as a captain in 2013. In 2016 he was promoted to Senior Captain. Since graduating from college Matt has spent most of his time working on the water - where his travels have t a k e n h i m around the coun- try and to the Caribbean. His knowledge of boats and boat operations have proven invalua- ble to CTC. In his new role, Matt is responsi- ble for all as- pects of our ma- rine operations, including man- aging all boat crew staff. Please join us in congratulating Matt on his well deserved promo- tion!
(207) 846-5227/846-3700 16 North Road, PO Box 27 Chebeague Island, ME 04017 chebeaguetrans@gmail.com chebeaguetrans.com Please have the ID card available for deckhands if asked so we can confirm your eligibility for a reduced price ferry ticket (green tickets). Thanks! Heater in Freight Shed! For the comfort of our passengers, CTC has installed a heater in the freight shed on Cousins. Ken Pelton de- signed the system which includes a timer installed on the wall. The first person arriving before a ferry should turn on the heater to warm the shed. Notice to Annual Parking Permit Holders… Annual parking permit holders who are not residents are issued an ID card with their parking sticker.
For years, CTC crew members have voluntarily offered assistance to passen- gers needing help boarding or exiting the Islander. Travel on ramps to the float at low tide poses a significant safe- ty risk for all riders, particularly for those who require help -- and for the CTC crew members who provide it. The number of requests for assistance has grown in recent years, as have inci- dents where passenger and crew safety has been jeopardized. A serious acci- dent involving passengers or crew mem- bers is a very real possibility. As part of its ongoing evaluation of safe operations, the CTC board of directors has enacted new guidelines for passen- ger assistance. These will go into effect on February 15, 2019. As of that date, the CTC crew will no longer provide assistance to passengers at half-tide or below. Assistance will continue to be available at half-tide and above, when movement up and down ramps is safer for all. Passengers who require physical assis- tance are encouraged to plan their trav- el accordingly. Why is CTC implementing this policy now? Safety. Safety for our crew and safety for all who ride the ferry. Over the past several years, CTC has attempted to identify and implement a safer means of moving passengers in need of assistance on the ramps. This included the purchase of a state-of-the- art powered wheelchair. Despite several modifications, the chair proved incapa- ble of moving passengers safely. With a 12-foot tidal range, low tides rendered the ramp too steep even for even a high- tech power chair. CTC is actively working with the town to find both short- and long-term solu- tions to this problem. Among the op- tions are longer ramps, which would reduce the incline even at low tides. What is the impact of the new policy? *Emergency transport provided by the
Town of Chebeague will not be affected. Fire/rescue workers are trained to safe- ly move individuals and have access to transport equipment suitable for all conditions. CTC will continue to be on call 24/7 to provide mainland emergen- cy transport as it does currently. *CTC carries a standard wheelchair onboard. Individuals who must travel at less than half-tide and those accompa- nying them are welcome to use the chair at their own risk. *Travel via Casco Bay Lines is an op- tion because safe access is not depend- ent on the tides. *To help travel planning, CTC will pro- vide a chart of ferry trips where crew assistance will be available (weather conditions permitting) as part of its newsletter “What’s New at CTC?” The newsletter is included in the monthly Island Calendar. It is also posted on the News and Info page of CTC’s website www.chebeaguetrans.com and on the website www.chebeague.org Addition- ally, anyone wishing to receive a copy of the monthly newsletter (and tide travel chart) via email may sign up on CTC’s News and Info page. Copies of the chart will also be available on the ferry and at the CTC office. The CTC board has carefully weighed the need for instituting this new safety guideline over the past year, aware that it will pose an inconvenience for some of our customers. It has been the con- sistent position of all our Captains that ramps steeper than half-tide are unsafe and that the safety of all our passengers and of our crew must be our highest priority regardless of past practice. We will continue to assist all who need it, but only when that assistance does not jeopardize safety. And CTC will continue to work with the Town of Chebeague Island to find a long-term solution to safer access.

Lent Worship Series— Holy Vessels: Healing and Wholeness— Here on Chebeague we’re no stranger to seeing sea glass on our beaches— beautiful colors that are sought afterby collectors, jewelers, artists, and beachcombers. Yet sea
and two of our youth, Laura Hamilton and Wyatt Englund, are still looking for financial gifts to help with the trip. You can give to support the trip by writing a check to CUMC with “Guatemala February Mission” in the memo line. Also, look for more details soon about an additional fundraising event! Bible Study and Sunday School: Spiritual Formation for All of Life— We have opportunities for growth and learning for all ages on Sunday mornings. Our One Room Deep Blue Kids Sunday School is ideal for kids, and our Bible Study at 9:00 a.m. is for anyone who wants to dive more deeply into what we’re exploring in worship. We’re hoping to expand our offerings to include groups for preteens. We also host book studies; if there is a book you are looking to read and talk about with others that deals with spiritual topics, contact the church. Church Library— We’ve started a library in the back room of the Parish House! Our collection includes Bibles, spiritual classics, writings from modern-day authors, and everything in between. If you would like to donate (or borrow!) from the library, contact the church office or stop by the Parish House to take a look! Online Giving— As you look at your charitable giving, prayerfully consider adding CUMC to your list. Our buildings, programs, and community events—from Sunday worship to our music ministry to our food pantry and community support programs—as well as the ability to host weddings and funerals and community gatherings, are funded primarily through your gifts. Your financial contributions are tax-deductible. Visit our website (http://www.chebeagueumc.org/donate. html) to give online.
glass begins as something discarded, something broken. After it is tossed about by the water and refined by the sand, it becomes something precious and to be treasured. While we know that suffering is not necessary and that we are created as whole beings as God’s beloved children, when pain comes and we find ourselves lost and broken, it is not the end of the story. We will explore God’s healing and wholeness over the season of Lent (Ash Wednesday on March 6, First Sunday of Lent on March 10) using the metaphor and journey of sea glass. For this series, if you have sea glass you are looking to get rid of, please consider giving some to the church to help us create our altar décor. Contact the church office or Pastor Melissa for arrangements.
Guatemala Service Trip Support— We celebrate that this month, four islanders are headed to Guatemala for a week to give of their time and their gifts to the Mayan people who live in the
mountains and who have almost no access to reliable medical care. Christine Englund, Polly Wentworth,
