J uly is the height of summer, and all island visitors hit the wharf planning to cram as many summer memories as possible into their vacation time. The Islander crosses so loaded that it floats lower in the water. Barges bring SUVs stuffed with the essentials of summer recreation. The official kick-off event is the Fourth of July, and on Chebeague, it is a spectacular event. Forty years ago, before there was a Rec Center with its pool, we ran picnics at the school and set up games including a tug of war between fishermen and firemen. We had teams of six racing on the long boards donated by Thick and Thin Lumber—proprietor Don Munsey. One year Brother Ross donated little crabs for the races held on a blue tarp down at Chandlers Cove. Jonathan Komlosy, a teenager, won the beautiful legs contest (Banu was the judge). There will be countless new memories forged this year. Given the turmoil of our present government, it is good to remember that the Fourth of July honors the Declaration of Independence, the radical foundation document of our nation. In June, the voters of Chebeague Island approved funding for renovating our island school and we lost another of the great bedrock mothers of our community: Joan Robinson. Unfortunately, we have lost a steady flow of these wonderful mothers in the past few months. Once again we propose the one percent for art in school construction be used to construct a tribute to all the wonderful mothers in our community who have made the Chebeague Community School the core of family on our island. match our cherished memories here on Chebeague. Paula’s mother, Mary Mason, the island’s oldest year- round resident, will be spending the Fourth at the Island Commons as she recuperates from her recent fall. First, we want to thank the wonderful Chebeague Rescue and CTC crew who responded and transported Mary to the hospital. Next, we are forever grateful to Amy and Vicky for helping us make Mary’s transitional move to the farm easier. Let us join the chorus that appreciates the wonderful social services here on Chebeague. Ginny Ballard had been a constant support for our family as we cope with aging.
