Notes from the Council

DR. O’DONNELL IS RETURNING TO THE WELLNESS CENTER THIS SUMMER!

The proceeds from Chedemption have been tallied, checks have gone out, and it is time to think about signing up to help keep the cans and bottles making money for the island nonprofits! You don’t have to be a member of a nonprofit to help. Please let Annie Thaxter know that you are willing to lend a hand, and she will make sure to find a time that works for you. The cans and bottles have to go off the island one way or another, and by working together, we can make sure they don’t go into the trash and add to the cost of island waste removal. And the fact that the money returns to the island in the form of checks to each participating nonprofit is nice too! Please let us know whether you are interested in helping with the 4 th of July Parade. The theme this year is “Songs of the Sea.” Dr. O’Donnell is back! He will be here every other Wednesday morning from 9:00 to 11:30 starting June 6. Stop in and say hello. It looks like the popular free dental clinic will be back in August. We will post the date as soon as we know when to expect them. You can get an appointment to get your teeth cleaned, have an oral cancer check, and obtain referrals for further dental work.

H E WILL BE HERE JUNE 6 & 20 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. NO APPOINTMENT NEEDED PAYMENT DUE AT THE TIME OF SERVICE

The Wellness Center with Paula Favreau, RN, Is Open for Blood Draws, Blood Pressure Checks, PT/INR Testing, Medication Setup, Flu Shots, Dressing Changes, Suture Removal, Wellness Checks, and Health Information No appointment needed. No charge for these services. Tuesday June 12 & 26 9:00 to 11:30 a.m.

Dr. Redmond of Casco Bay Chiropractic is coming to the Wellness Center on June 15 You can now have your chiropractic treatment right here on the island!

Island Commons Chebeague Island Community Center Update

Junior Golf Camp The Chebeague Recreation Center and the Great Chebeague Golf Club are pleased to offer a new camp this summer! July 30 through August 3, 9:00 a.m to noon at the Golf Club For campers ages 7–16; all experience levels welcome Taught by PGA Professional Brian Bickford and his assistants Cost for the week is $100 per golfer Registration information available in CRC brochure

The Community Center has been working hard to better serve the community during emergencies. Each of the three nonprofits is devising a clear set of emergency procedures and hopes to have new rules in place soon. But by far the biggest news is that we are buying a new, larger generator to service the building during power outages. We have already received a generous $1000 anonymous donation to help pay for the installation costs, and the remaining costs will be shared by the Hall, Library, and Council. We hope to have the generator up and running by summer’s end! We are also finalizing plans to spiff up the exterior of the building. We have quotes of just over $40,000 for the exterior work needed, and we are now working on the funding aspect. Once the exterior is made dazzling, we can finish landscaping around the front of the building and on the side by Doughty’s Island Market. We hope to start the project this fall. Have a safe summer, and stop by the Community Center. Given the many activities sponsored by the Library, the Hall, and the Council, there is always something going on!

Marty’s Memories: Martha Hamilton, Chebeague Community Artist by Marty Trower

As I was gobbling up the years, striving to just keep things going, meeting obligations, and balancing work and play, I don’t think I ever stopped to notice and appreciate how community members were influencing me. Then, a few weeks ago, Michael Hamilton showed up at my door with a box of random art supplies that had belonged to his mother, Martha Hamilton, and before that, to her artist father, Fred KomLosy. I was touched by this gesture and so very honored. After he left, I sat for hours on my kitchen floor picking through the dust-covered vessels of exquisite tools for making marks and swipes of color. I touched each of them slowly, thinking. I moved through a pile of papers, feeling the nap of watercolor paper, seeing the transparency of tracing paper and imagined possibilities of the blank canvas boards, and held my breath in awe. I don’t know whether I am the one to do justice to these treasured gifts; my confidence has always been lagging. Yet somehow, through the years Martha showed me how to lead an artistic life within a community. It wasn’t about producing works for a show and making a living from making art. It was more about relating to the people, the place, and the goings on in our unique island setting. And creating art.

Making posters, designing sets for plays, doing art projects with the schoolchildren, illustrating what needed to be done—the new Town of Chebeague Island seal, the library’s seagull logo—these skills poured continuously from Martha the way words flow from writers. I benefitted from many bits of advice Martha offered from her years of experimenting with every type of material she touched. Now, when I gather pottery shards on the beach I remember Martha’s words to me. “You must soak the pieces in a pan of some bleach and more water,” she’d warned, “otherwise the salt will leach out later and spoil your drawing. “Well, I never do draw on those surfaces, but Martha did, tiny black and white scenes on those smooth white shapes that became jewels at craft fairs. Around the time of what would turn out to be the last Christmas season for Martha, I asked her to come to the school and give her popular workshop on paper snowflake cutting to the children. She willingly came and wielded scissors like a pro, and like magic, unfolding cascades of intricate white shapes appeared in front of the gaping mouths of already charged holiday-anticipating kids. Martha never seemed to lose her enthusiasm for making art nor of imparting the joys of making it to others.

BOOK STUDY GROUP Are you “spiritual” but not “religious”? Curious about post-modern Christianity?

We’re excited about this new book by Brian McLaren (2017). (He also wrote A New Kind of Christianity [2011]). We want to talk about T he Great Spiritual Migration with curious, open-minded people.

We begin on Sunday June 10 at 4:30 p.m. at the library.

This discussion is open to all. You are invited to attend.

FMI: Gloria Brown at 846-3491 or gjbrown58a@gmail.com

When people say, “I’m not religious, but I’m spiritual,” many of them, I think, see what Jesus saw, that the Spirit’s realm of activity can’t be limited to the sphere of religion in general, much less to any particular religion. The Spirit of God is the fine wine of justice, joy, and peace; the uncontained wind of creativity, comfort, and liberation; the living water of holiness, beauty, and love. Whenever people encounter justice, joy, peace, creativity, comfort, liberation, holiness, beauty, love, or any other good thing, they are in some way encountering the Spirit, or at least the signature or aftermath of the Spirit. The Spirit, then, is bigger than any particular religion or religion in general. Nobody has a monopoly on Spirit. – Brian McLaren

CHEBEAGUE TRANSPORTATION COMPANY What’s New at CTC?

Freight on Bus and Ferry

CTC operates under regulatory restrictions on what can be trans- ported on the buses and the ferry—and these rules are not always the same. We understand this causes confusion for our passengers and have posted on the ferry and on all the buses what the restrictions are. You can also find a chart of the restrictions on the News and Infor- mation page and Freight page of our website. In addition to the regu- latory restrictions, the Town of Yarmouth re- stricts commercial deliv- eries to the Cousins Island wharf to 7:00 AM to 12:15 PM on non- holiday weekdays. Only non-dual wheeled vehi- cles may make deliver- ies. Finally, CTC must re- strict certain freight due to the volume of person- al freight we transport during summer week- ends. CTC will prohibit trans- portation of machines with engines (mower, moped, etc.), lumber, building materials, ap- pliances, and furniture beginning on the 12:15 PM ferry on Friday through the 7:15 PM ferry on Sunday from May through Septem- ber. At other times, transportation is at the discretion of the bus driver and captain.

Update on the New Ferry The contract is signed and the promised delivery date set: April 30, 2019. CTC’s new ferry is finally more than a long-sought dream. Now all we need is a name. For more than a year, every inch of the 56-foot, steel-hulled boat being constructed by the Islander’s builder, Washburn & Dough- ty of East Boothbay, has been scrutinized by CTC’s ferry commit- tee, with input from a naval architect, industry professionals and engineers – but most importantly, from the crew and board mem- bers who know our needs best. From the outset, their goal has not changed: to design a safe vessel, one that is reliable, easy to maintain, cost-efficient and suitable for all seasons -- and for many seasons. While the new boat will look a lot like the Islander, our 33-year- old workhorse, there will be a wide range of technological up- dates and passenger amenities, including a head, more room on the stern for freight and enhanced safety features for landing the boat for our captains and deckhands. One design feature that has generated a great deal of study and debate is the seating configuration, a decision of great interest (and importance) to our passengers and crew. The new boat will have rows of facing seats. The reasons are in line with every oth- er decision made about the new ferry: safety, maintenance and easier access for our passengers and crew. This layout will provide more than two feet of space between rows versus 10 inches if all seats were facing forward. The addi- tional space will allow better access for passengers and the can- vas totes they often bring aboard, as well as for deckhands col- lecting tickets. The crew can enter below-deck holds without hav- ing to remove the seats. Cleaning the boat will be much simpler. The wider spacing between rows also offers several important safety benefits. Seat stanchions can be placed to reduce tripping hazards. Life jackets will be stowed above the windows and the additional room between rows will make access easier in the event of an emergency. And for those who simply don’t want to stare their neighbors (or strangers) in the eye, or have their quiet moments interrupted, there will be 7 groupings of inside seats that will provide options for your 15-minute trip. If you would like to see the updated design of the new ferry, check out the News and Information page of our website, chebeaguetrans.com

Community Matters: Volunteering for Chedemption

Once summer comes, the nonprofits each sign up for a week to take over Chedemption from the Council’s winter crew of Annie Thaxter, Ester Knight, Binkie Boxer, Lynne Priest, Mary Holman, Dianne Whetham, and Sam McLean. For nonprofits, that means one week of filling slots every day but Tuesday: a single two-hour slot on Monday and Thursday mornings (9:00 to 11:00), three and a half hours of slots on Wednesday and Friday afternoons (1:30 to 5:00), and four two-hour slots on Saturday and Sunday (9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). JUNE 2018 CHEBEAGUE ISLAND COUNCIL CALENDAR

One Man’s Island by Bob Libby

On Chebeague Island June is the dividing line. Until June everyone is thinking about summer. In June summer arrives. Long before the solstice formally shapes the season, island culture has called it summer. On the Stone Wharf by ordinance no vehicles may park on the south side—the area reserved for the lobster business of hauling traps and gear out to the bay. In addition, the north end of the wharf is wall-to-wall trap piles and trucks coming and going with the summer’s gear. Add to that the rapid escalation in demand for CTC barging services. In June barges full of summer freighted vehicles arrive around high tides loaded with renters and extended families dreaming of all the special experiences of summer on Chebeague. Of course June is the traditional end of the school year; one effect of that milestone for islanders is the elimination of two convenient boat trips each day. All winter if we needed to be in Portland by 8:00 a.m., we knew on school days we could stay home until the sun had risen a little more. The Inn is now open, and the weddings will start to bring celebrants by the bus load. If you have had a chance to observe the early morning boats, you

Contact Richard Bowen at rhbowen3@gmail.com or 207-831-6148. Our recent situation has reminded us of the special place the ferry has in island life. As we finally came home from Maine Med, we shared the boat ride with other long-time islanders who are facing long convalescence. We have begun to think about the life line of that service—the aid they provide, the visiting nurses and physical therapists who commute out to the island on a regular basis. Now consider the emergency services coordinated between Chebeague volunteers, Yarmouth Rescue, and our boat crew. It is an amazing feat and accomplished without inconveniencing the hordes of summer visitors. Those of us who use this service all year long appreciate all that CTC does for this community and try to convey that idea to our summer visiting friends. will have seen the small army of tradespeople and construction workers who repair, renovate, and start new projects on the island this time of year. In recent years the summer shopping day has changed for islanders; Thursday has become the new Friday. June is the month when thousands of flats and tubs of flowers and vegetables arrive on every boat.

Don’t miss the Chebeague Fire &Rescue Open House this summer on Saturday July 21!

It’s a carnival-themed event with lots of fun games and events that are perfect for kiddos and grownups alike!
