On the Cover Many of you will recognize the boat on this month’s cover, the Susan Adams , named for Ernie Burgess’s wife Susan. This 36-foot wooden boat was built by Herb Rich in 1972, and Ernie has been its only owner. It has an Isuzu engine and a hydraulic trap hauler. Ernie says all the electronics “are right here in my head.” Ernie started fishing with his father, Alger Burgess, when he was about 10 years old and has kept it up for the past 65 years! The Calendar welcomes submissions from its readers, including letters and thank you notes, but it cannot publish anything that is political in nature, libelous, or obscene. All submissions should include the author’s name and contact information. Without exception, the deadline for submission is noon on the 20th day of the month preceding publication. Submissions and ad copy may be mailed (P.O. Box 12), left at the Council office (247 South Rd.), or emailed ( chebeagueislandcouncil@gmail.com ) and sent as attachments (.doc; no pdfs) or included in the body of the text. Images and photographs should be sent in a .jpg, .jpeg, or .rtf format. Please do not use the old email address at island.calendar@chebeague.net, as this is an inactive account. As a courtesy and space permitting, island nonpro ts are given up to a free half page each month to publish their news. Any such submissions exceeding a half page will be charged at the usual rate. All submissions become the property of the Chebeague Island Council, which reserves the right to edit them for length and clarity. Notes from the Council

The Annual Health Screening Clinic was great. The USM student nurses and the dermatologist, Dr. Riemann, together saw about 20 people, including some children. We are all grateful to the USM student nurses and faculty and Dr. Riemann for donating their time for this important health check. And we have some prize winners: Donna Damon won the 10-punch pool pass, Peter Rice won theWater Taxi ride, Stephen Rich won the Hannaford card, Lola Armstrong won the Rec Center Fitness Room pass, and Suhail Bisharat won the 30-minute massage from Vicki Todd Massage Therapy! Thank you to everyone who donated these great prizes and who volunteered to help to make sure islanders get healthy and stay healthy. The 4 th of July theme this year is “Songs of the Sea.” As we have in the past, the Council will organize and oversee the parade; however, this year we are looking for some additional volunteers to help carry on this wonderful Chebeague tradition. Deb Bowman has been the energy behind the parade’s organization for many years, and she is ready to hand this task off to some fresh faces. She has worked out all the kinks and has the paper work ready to pass on. Thank you, Deb, for making the parade so much fun for all these years! Please

let the Council know if you are willing to help. It is a one-day event but, like all the beloved island traditions, there are many behind the scenes details that require attention to make the “magic” happen. This brings me to the 4 th of July picnic. This too is an island tradition with a long history and many changes over the years. The Council does not coordinate the picnic. This has been a community effort with various nonprofits participating over the years. This year, the school will be under construction and there will be limited access. However, the playing field, the play/climbing equipment, and access to the Rec Center will be available. There has been a lot of interest in moving the picnic back to Chandlers Cove, and this may be the perfect time to give that some serious thought. Now is the time to start thinking about what, where, and how the picnic should happen. Again, this is not a Council program and we cannot take a leadership role in the planning, but we would like to encourage the nonprofit organizations and the community at large to start this conversation if there is to be a picnic.Would it really be the 4 th of July on Chebeague without a lobster roll?

Island Commons Notes from the Hall

hours per soup, including shopping and prepping, in addition to four hours for setting up, serving, and cleaning up. Given our usual crew of six or seven people in the kitchen, that is around thirty hours of volunteer time for each two-soup meal. And Community Lunch involves even more time, with shopping, prep, and cooking taking an average of sixteen hours before the food arrives in the Hall kitchen and another at least twenty-five hours of volunteer time setting up, serving, and mopping up afterward. Again, any “magic” perceived by our loyal lunch goers is actually the result of an incredible number of hours behind the scene and much dedication. This year we served our meals family style, meaning that we put eight portions of each menu item on each eight-person table. If we had leftovers once everyone had received their initial portions, we readily offered them. Planning for these lunches is part art and part guesswork.We aim to serve fifty to sixty portions, including a small number of veggie-option meals. Often, we run out of food and the kitchen help goes without. Conversely, when only forty-five people show up, the volunteers get to eat too and any leftovers can be packaged for the food pantry. We believe that serving meals family style helps promote the Hall’s mission of fostering community, and we count on that feeling of community to make this approach work. We apologize for running out of food at times, but we hope you will remember that we are all neighbors sharing these Wednesdays together. Thanks for supporting the Hall. Please start gathering your donations for the Martha Hamilton Arts for the Island Craft Swap. We will be ready to roll in late July with hundreds of items to satisfy your creative impulses.

The office will be closed Monday May 28 in observance of Memorial Day. Cemetary Cleanup Day May 19— The Annual Cemetery Cleanup Day will be Saturday May 19 from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

Second Half of Taxes Due March 30, 2018— The second half of your property taxes was due March 30, 2018.We sent reminder notices on April 13. If you have any questions about the balance due, please call 207-846-3148. New from Bureau of Motor Vehicles— When processing registrations, the registrant must now complete all information on the back of the registration. The current odometer reading of the vehicle must be reported as accurately as possible (no estimates or tenths of a mile) on the back of the white copy of the registration. Incorrect or estimated odometer readings may cause odometer discrepancies. Please bring an accurate mileage with you. New Code Enforcement Officer— Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we searched for a new Code Enforcement Officer. Jim Butler started work the last week in February. Town Meeting— The warrant for our Annual Town Meeting to be held Saturday June 9 will be finalized at the end of April. The proposed budget is only 1.88% higher than that of the previous year as of April 19, 2018. Elections June 12— We have four vacancies: David Hill and Mark Dyer on the Board of Selectmen and Jen Belesca and Jeff Putnam on the School Board have terms that end June 30, 2018. There will also be State Primary Elections on June 12.

Marty’s Memories: Opening Up the Cottage by Marty Trower

May, Mum, and the mice. Those memories are all mashed together. Mice and their winter occupation of the cottage were enough to undo my mother as soon as she walked into the summer house. As my sister and I were running to the edge of the bank, gulping in that sweet, hard-edged salt air, she would be stepping into the closed-up cottage, bracing herself for what she might find. We were no help. The smell of trapped air and winter-long mice dwelling made us gag. Our mother showed us chewed bars of new Ivory soap and stamped her foot, raging at the gluttonous rodents. When she pulled open the chest of drawers to get out the sheets to make up our beds, she recoiled in horror, finding them soaked through in old brown blood; ruined. A bullet hole through the front windowpane had allowed water to come in and damage the table that had always been in front of it, between the two wooden chairs we sat in.The veneer had curled up, but we continued to use it anyway and I still do, as the cottage is my home now. Dad made us pick up the thousands of branches and twigs on the property that had been torn from trees by winter winds. Jen and I never finished monotonous jobs like that.We wanted to get away, go out walking, and find the friends we hadn’t seen since the summer before. We wanted to be seen, here. Getting the cottage warm in May was not easy. The slanting red brick fireplace was always out of wood, and it was our job to go out and get it. We would first use the fallen tree branches for fuel, but those

didn’t last long. We would then have to gather driftwood from the beach, but that was usually wet and had to dry out for a while before it was any good. We also had a horrible upright kerosene heater that crowded the space in the kitchen–dining area. Our parents always grumbled about it, but they were the ones who were in charge of getting it going and keeping it going. One Saturday night, my sister and I were home alone and the fire in the heater went out. We thought we were pretty clever to get it lit again until an enormous roar told us that something had gone terribly wrong. Flames were jumping out of the opening, terrifying us. One of us said, “We have to throw water on it to stop it!” I was probably the one who grabbed the nearest receptacle and filled it. Unfortunately, it was the tin bucket where we put our garbage scraps before taking them outside. Oh, that was so long ago, but I can still see inside the circular opening of the kerosene heater—the oil, the water, and garbage floating around in a sizzling, smelly mess—and the two of us gaping at it. Yes, the fire was out, but we were wrecks, afraid it would erupt again. We tied Skipper, our huge springer spaniel, to a long rope and hauled him over with us, in the pouring rain and raging wind to where our parents were visiting. The fear of telling them what we had done has erased any other memories of that incident. I’m sure they were not happy about it, but maybe they were pleased that at least we had not burned down the cottage. I know I am grateful too, if not a bit embarrassed at the memory.

Crew Safety Training Exercises Safety is the priority at CTC. We recently had several crewmembers attend the Coast Guard Sector Northern New England Industry Day in Portland where the Coast Guard provided an update on cur- rent trends and new regulations. Continuing our strong training program, the ferry crew had two crew training drills this quarter. One drill focused on best practices for securing the ferry. The second drill covered several topics in- cluding testing the new powered wheelchair . Cousins Parking Lot Safety The speed limit on Pogy Shore Road is 5 MPH. Unfortunately, our parking lot crew reports that our customers frequently do not ad- here to this. We are trying to be good neighbors, so please adhere to this speed limit! Safety on the Ferry Passengers are prohibited from assisting the deckhand in securing the ferry unless requested to do so. Passengers should not open gates or chains. This is the responsibility of the deckhand. Passen- gers should remain seated until the ferry is docked and the deck- hand has opened the door or gate. Safety at Cousins Island Wharf Our buses need to enter the “hammerhead” at a particular angle in order to be able to back out. Vehicles parked at the wharf may make it difficult for the bus driver to make the turn. If the bus is trying to pull into the hammerhead, please move your vehicle to accommodate. In addition, the bus leaves the hammerhead after the ferry has left the dock. The driver’s visibility is limited when backing up. Refrain from walking behind the bus when backing up. Summer Ferry Fee Increases effective 5/1/2018 Child (Ages 6-11)/Pet (20 tickets) - $26.00 Resident/Parking Permit Holder—Adult (10 tickets) - $39.00 CTC Carts We provide carts for our customers at a considerable cost. We ask for your cooperation. Please do not overload the carts and leave them on the wharf at Chebeague—don’t take them home!!

Barging Fee Surcharge at Yankee Marina Barging Starts May 1st!

Community Matters: Meet the New CRC Director by Marty Trower

Many of us want to know about our new Chebeague Recreation Center director, and I’m pleased to introduce him to you. The easiest way to start is to say, okay, he used to be known as “Mr. Tammy Hoidal”—our kindergarten–2 nd grade teacher at the school for the past nine years. But since moving to the island last year, the couple and their three young children, Olin, Drew, and Wells, have gained a reputation for

Dave’s background is in business, and he sees the running of the Rec Center as an exciting challenge. He wants to continue to offer the many successful programs and maintain the existing facilities. The pool will always be the hub for summer fun and fitness. Volunteer Field will still be crawling with athletes conferring and zigzagging on the turf. This summer, junior golf classes will be running in conjunction with the Great Chebeague Island Golf Club. Tammy will be offering a tumbling and dance session, and the soccer program will be back once again. And keep an eye out for upcoming information on the ever popular Art, Farm, and Theater camps. Funding these regular and new programs is always a challenge, and here is where Dave sees his experience in business coming in and helping the big picture. The hardest part of any new endeavor is to be able to do your best and please your public. Dave says he is hoping that everyone will let him know about their needs and expectations for this great island facility.

May always immediately recalls Mother’s Day and Memorial Day as the prominent markers celebrated on Chebeague each year. This year our community family is coping with the recent loss of two wonderful mothers, Beverly Dyer and Althea Dugliss. In many ways these two epitomized the special status of island mothers. We had the good fortune to observe the generous and serene effects of these two as we lived our lives on this island. Every day we saw Bob and Beverly drive at eleven miles per hour around the island in late afternoon. Every time we visited the house at the end of South Road we smiled trying to imagine Beverly raising all her rambunctious children in that cottage. Famous Maine families with prominent siblings that contribute to civic life often honor the mother in the home: the Bush, Washburn, Stanley, and Mills families come to mind; on Chebeague that family could be the Dyers. Visiting Althea’s kitchen always emphasized to us the art of being a mother. When we are faced with the untimely loss of one of our essential family members, we empathize with the survivors and struggle

Thanks are due to Doug Ross and all the other volunteers who make sure the flags fly and the veterans are remembered here on Chebeague. Make sure to take a moment to view the memorial stones around the island in front of the former Grange, at Chandlers Cove, and on the fourth green in honor of Bob Jones. Honor all those who sacrificed to provide this cherished island for us. to express how strongly we feel their loss. For Charles and Henry there is no adequate condolence. All we can offer is the recognition that we noticed and appreciated the epitome of family that these women represented. The past tributes in the form of the Jenny Wren Run, the Martha Hamilton Art and Craft Swap, and the Betsy McColl Fund contributions to gardens and public library provide models to find ways to remember these island mothers. Our newly renovated school may offer a platform to fashion some memorial to Althea and Beverly and to all the mothers who make Chebeague so special by raising their children to love this island.
