Contents From the Island Council Notes from the Hall Island Commons News From the Town Office

On the Cover David Campbell owns the Amanda E. , which is named after his daughter and is his third boat. This 32-foot Holland, built in Belfast, Maine, has a 327-hp Chevy diesel engine, hydraulic hauler, and all the essential electronics, including radar and GPS. David has owned the Amanda E. for seven years. A lifelong Chebeaguer, he got his first fishing license at the age of five when he started going out with his father, Earl Campbell. David enjoys being out on the water and thinks the best part of being a lobsterman is being independent—“no one is telling you what to do.” (Photo courtesy of Cathy MacNeill.) Island Commons Notes from the Hall

Join us April 18 for the final Community Lunch of the season. It’s the ever-popular roast beef lunch sponsored by Mark H. Dyer, Inc. As coffee, soup, and Community Lunch season wind down, our other programs at the Hall start getting into gear. Beginning in May we will be looking for donations to the Martha Hamilton Arts for the Island Craft Swap scheduled for July. This event, named in honor of artist and crafter Martha Hamilton, solicits your donations of unwanted or excess fine arts and crafts materials beforehand and then offers you the opportunity to stock up your shelves or start a new hobby on the day of the Craft Swap. This is your chance to destash, declutter, and downsize your art supply hoard and then to stock up with all new supplies on the day of the swap. Last year’s event was a huge success! We received hundreds of items, ranging from high-end yarn to woodworking supplies

to paints and brushes—with everything in between— and were able to find new homes for most of this fabulous merchandise! Shoppers were inspired by the $5 entry fee, which allowed them to take home as much as they wanted—from yards of upholstery fabric to tatting gear and picture frames. If you could think of a craft, you no doubt could have found the supplies to feed it at the Craft Swap! Contact Sam McLean for more information. The Hall is also looking to replace our old and, in some cases, broken overhead lights with energy-efficient models. In conjunction with the other members of the Chebeague Island Community Center, we are also soliciting bids and grant money to upgrade our generator and spruce up the exterior of the building. These needed upgrades will cost at least $55,000, so we have a lot of work to do!

Wellness Center News

Marty’s Memories: Pussy Willows by Marty Trower That said, we are happy to welcome Paula Favreau, RN. Paula was born and raised in Portland and attended SMCC. Paula has years of nursing experience, most recently with the Mass General Trauma Team. She will continue to be at the Wellness Center every other Tuesday and is available for home visits if needed. Remember, Wellness Center visits are free and no appointment is needed. How many years have gone by since I stopped to look at the pussy willows? My father’s birthday was in April, and as adults we always gathered as a family on the island for the occasion. Often, we would take a walk after lunch, usually in sunny and slushy snow-melting conditions, and finding pussy willows was the highlight of those excursions. We always referred to them as “the willy-pusses” the way our childhood Danish babysitter had in her singsong Scandinavian lilt. My sister Jen and I still use that name, chuckling and remembering. There are pussy willows out now, but they aren’t in the places I remember them. I feel like I’m starting over, beginning a new tradition. Now, I take the time to look and my eyes slow and cuddle up to their mewing kitten forms, so small and tightly coiled, their sensuous gray and delicate white “fur” hues radiate, and I feel I have discovered gold in my back yard. When the snow is hanging around in those ugly humps and the color green is faded beneath the brown, chickadees start hopping on the ground outside instead of darting in from out of nowhere to the feeder. I see them as larger, airborne pussy willows, their same gray and white softness making you want to reach out and touch and say: “I will take care of you, I will protect you.” Again, I am left in awe of nature, that it can be so loyal, that it can persevere for us and in the process conjure up human emotions from delicate memories lying dormant under its exquisite beauty right under our noses, right in our backyards. That is the gold. The Wellness Center congratulates our nurse, Steve Baybutt, on his promotion to Director of Population Health and Telemedicine at Maine HealthCare at Home. Steve will continue to be our contact at MaineHealth, and we are looking forward to working with him to expand our telehealth services. Steve is a wonderful nurse, and we will all miss him.

CHEBEAGUE TRANSPORTATION COMPANY What’s New at CTC?

Freight on the Bus and Ferry In serving the island, CTC transports great quantities of both per- sonal and commercial freight. We would like to remind our customers of some of our freight rules and regulations. On the Bus. The buses are used to transport personal freight only. Commercial freight should be delivered directly to the wharf or shipped on Casco Bay Lines. Passengers who have large amounts of personal freight should deliver it to the wharf and then return to the parking lot for the ride on the bus. Federal regulations prohibit the transportation of any type of fuel or anything that has - or has had - fuel in it. Transporting vehicle or marine bat- teries is also prohibited. On the Boat. CTC can transport up to ten small gas powered appliances on the stern deck of the Is- lander (Up to 49cc in engine size). CTC cannot transport gas- oline containers of any size if they con- tain gasoline. Kero- sene can be transport- ed. CTC cannot transport liquefied natural gas or pro- pane in any size. Con- tact the office to barge items that cannot be transported on the ferry.

Weather has not cooperated this spring and we are unsure when we will be able to complete need- ed yard work and start our ser- vice. However, we are booking barging for May and beyond. Our 2018 pricing schedule is shown below. Reminder on procedures • Make sure you are prepared to give full information to the office when booking barging including: vehicle make, color and license place number and whether or not you will be with the vehicle. Our mission is to sustain Chebeague as a year-round community through supporting its nonprofits. In that spirit, we invite former as well as new applicants to put forth their most creative and innovative program requests for grant consideration. In addition to our regular annual grant program, this year we have instituted a small grants program. This one-year pilot is designed to meet unanticipated or urgent needs regardless of when they arise. Interested nonprofit organizations should simply submit a letter describing the need. The program includes five small grants in the amount of $500 each on a first-come, first-served basis. Two have been funded thus far. This year more than 500 people generously supported the Recompense Fund in response to the Raymond Family Foundation Challenge. For more information, call Cindy at 207-846-1055 The sunlight is so strong now that the ground warms quickly, and soon it will be dry enough to plant. The Old Farmer’s Almanac was particularly accurate for March and predicts drying winds this month and a particularly arid and warm summer in the northeast. We who like to garden are learning about using mulches to protect our plants. Living on this island makes the gathering of seaweeds to compost a natural advantage, and the high winds of March have Having just heard the stunning news that Tproperties (a likely division of the Trump Organization) has bought Hope Island to develop a new resort makes it impossible to think about any other island gossip as April begins. Some of you know that Paula and I have been going steady since 1962 and I have pulled a prank on her every year since. Now, welcome to April: anointed as the ultimate month of change, the first full month of spring. Though as an early riser, I am not a fan of the legislative rule of daylight saving time: it seems regressive that just when we have achieved earlier dawns they are pushed back later. Still, the natural increase in daylight is exciting, and soon we will experience that special day at our house when sunlight aligns with the eastern windows and western doors to shine through the core of our kitchen from dawn to dusk.

raked heaps of pine needles from the trees. The deep snowbanks protected our shrubs from dessication most of the winter. Now, island gardeners must be proactive to protect ornamentals from drought. Every year we have admired this month when looking at the island while traveling from Cousins because it is when the major trees start to bud, offering a rosy blush to the skyline. This is not a prank: Yankee magazine’s second season on public television will feature a show on Chebeague. This will continue the rise in tourist interest in this “uniquely charming location.” The program starts its broadcast this month. Change is inevitable, and the responsible idea for Chebeaguers is to prepare for change. Sustainability is a popular concept these days, and the evidence convinces us that Casco Bay faces an outsized impact from global warming as compared with most of the rest of the world. Warming waters, acidification, and the prominence of toxic algae blooms confront traditional ocean harvesting practices. If we hope to preserve the island’s economic vitality, we must develop innovative strategies to handle the changes coming our way. Perhaps the new Trump Resort on Hope Island will make Chebeague great again. April fool.
