On the Cover Chris Rich started lobstering when he was just 11 years old! Stelias , his 34-foot wooden lobster boat, was designed by his father, Herb Rich, and has all the usual bells and whistles including a 150-hp Isuzu engine and a hydraulic hauler. Built by Chris over the course of four winters with help from his father and brothers John and Sherman, Stelias was launched in 2004. It is named for Chris’s two sons, Stephen and Elias. Although lobstering is hard work, Chris, too, says the best part of being a lobsterman is being your own boss. (Photo courtesy of Cathy MacNeill.) Notes from the Council
at the
This is the time for sitting by the woodstove, drinking something warm, and thinking about all the things that need to get done “in the spring” and taking comfort in the fact that they cannot be done right now. Come spring, we will be looking for volunteers to help with the thrift shop repairs, Chedemption gets even busier, and suggestions for the 4 th of July theme begin to trickle in. But for right now it feels so nice to just relax and enjoy the beauty and quiet of Chebeague in the middle of winter.
The Slow Bell will be open for the Super Bowl starting at 6 p.m.
We’ll have wings, chowder, nachos, chicken fingers, fries, and desserts. Any customers who purchase a pizza from the Island School fundraiser that day (cispizzafundraiser@gmail.com) are welcome to bring their pizzas with them (no other outside food, please). 846-3078

Notes from the Hall
I t’s been a crazy Community Lunch season so far, with each meal generating ever-larger crowds. At times the success feels a bit dizzying! Thanks for your support! We hope to keep pleasing you and serving you the best meal we can for $7! This month Grace and Spec Eaton are sponsoring our Valentine’s Day meal, and we are trying to make it a memorable one. Spec has already dropped a broad hint that his favorite dessert is cheesecake! Next month is our St. Patrick’s Day meal sponsored by Peg Lyons, and April concludes our season with the roast beef meal sponsored by Mark H. Dyer, Inc. We already have several of our sponsorships filled for next year’s lunches, but if you or your company is interested in sponsoring one, give us a shout! We will be reassessing our soup program in an effort to give some relief to the faithful Wednesday soup makers and servers. If you have a soup you would like to make and help serve, we would love to hear from you. We will reimburse you for the ingredients if you save your receipts. We could also use some new hands for clean-up duty, which goes on well past the end of the meal. It’s great to see new faces and new energy in the kitchen!

Marty’s Memories: Keeping the Passage Open by Marty Trower
What a strange time of year. We are completely at the mercy of the weather, and it is difficult to get out of its way. There is no monotony though, and weather is the common denominator of chat. Right now, we are still encased in white and a trail has been broken and maintained from the Stone Pier across the chunked- up ice to Cousins Island. The Islander makes a racket plowing through it; her engine revs with energy and pushes the boat back and forth, side to side, just to get away from the float. When I was in art school in Portland in the 1960s, I tried to get out to Chebeague as much as possible. One frozen February night, I was in a car with friends in the Yarmouth area and I asked whether we could just ride down and look out over at Chebeague from the Cousins Island wharf. They stayed in the car while I got out and gingerly picked my way through the snow and down the ramp to the end of the float. It was so quiet down there and so very dark. I could see the lights on inside my friend’s car and hear the hum of the car radio. I crept down the ramp and was surprised to see the bulk of the water taxi, Polly-Lin ,
tied up to the float. I hopped on without thinking and screamed when I saw a mound on the center engine cover move and then speak! “Who’s there?” it boomed. A blond head and the lanky shape of Smitty, the boat’s captain emerged from a gray blanket, and I tried to explain what I was doing there, late at night, in the middle of the winter. Smitty used his converted lobster boat as a water taxi from the time we lost the Nellie G —and were left stranded, except for the Casco Bay Lines ferries that came from Portland and the other islands to Chandlers Cove—until the Islander was built and put into service. Smitty ran the boat himself and made sure to keep the traveling lanes open by going back and forth at night, taking nap breaks in between while tied up to the Cousins dock, as I found out that night. I was pretty embarrassed, but Smitty was jovial and actually seemed glad for the company. I didn’t stay long though, returning to my new mainland friends who couldn’t possibly understand my need to grasp a piece of Chebeague, even in the middle of the night, in the middle of a cruel winter.

The Mail
A Note of Thanks from Dianne Calder An open letter to all my friends and family near and far: This medical journey as I call it has been a long and tiresome one! The cards, letters, phone calls, hospital and rehab visits, food for the family, and so on have made the whole episode bearable. Probably six more weeks to go and mostly at The Cedars. I did this whole routine all summer last year only to have serious pain again in my knee in October. Examination by my surgeon and some tests confirmed staph infection that had to be cured. On December 15, the old prosthesis was removed and an antibiotic spacer put in its place. Six weeks of antibiotics by pic line and then two weeks off antibiotics with a test to follow to be sure the infection is gone. If all goes well in early February the surgery will be scheduled to put in a new prosthesis with rehab to follow at The Cedars. I can’t thank you all enough for your goodness, love, and prayers. Our friends have once again amazed us by providing meals for Dick and Kevin. Arlene cooks three nights a week, and I truly wish I was sitting down to one of those delicious dinners right now. To Lindy and Allyson, Dave and Cheryl, May, Tina, and Susie, a heartfelt thank you! I hope I haven’t left anyone out, but if I did, my apologies. I can’t name all the terrific things the family has done, but Kevin has taken on head of household duties—hauling groceries and cooking wonderful breakfasts on the weekends and some meals in between. Leanne is an angel, as everyone knows. Tom and Milt and our
wonderful grandchildren contribute daily with phone calls, pictures, text messages, and visits. Both Dick and I want to send a warm hug to each and every one of you who have reached out to us in some way. I’m looking forward to sitting on the porch and waving to all of
you this spring! With much love, Dianne
HeartfeltThanks We would like to thank the Chebeague Island Fire Department and its many volunteers for their response to the recent chimney fire at our home. The entire crew was exceptional and carried out their tasks in a confident and professional manner. We’ve used our woodstove for supplemental heat for 30 years, we clean our chimney regularly, and we always felt we had everything “under control.” But something was different this time. It was tempting to just let the fire die down and hope for the best, but we made the call and we’re lucky we did. Our takeaway: better safe than sorry. Make the call. They came and knew just what to do—and what a relief it was.
Our heartfelt thanks! The Birkett Family

CHEBEAGUE TRANSPORTATION COMPANY What’s New at CTC? Safety Is Our Priority
Cousins Parking
TC BOARD MEETINGS
CTCCT
As the Island’s popula- tion grows, so does the demand for Cousins parking spots. Over the last few years many people have moved a car to Route One, either voluntarily or by assignment. Our priority for assigning spots in 2018 was: -one spot per year- round household -a second car if there are two full-time com- muters -Island business- es/organizations -Part-time seasonal commuters (receive partial year permit) Only Island residents with Maine license plates qualify for a spot. We do have many “weekday worker” permits ( workers trav- eling to Chebeague) that park during the day only Monday - Friday. These vehicles fill spots made availa- ble when Island com- muters leave the lot. Some of these vehicles may have license plates from other plac- es. Additionally, ten annu- al permits are reserved for Yarmouth resi- dents. These spots are assigned by Yarmouth in a lottery.
CTC’s primary concern is for the safety of our passengers and our crew. The current CTC Safety Policy reads: We strive for safe transportation of all passengers to and from Chebeague. Weather conditions, tides, and other factors may affect the relative safety of boarding the ferry. At the captain’s sole discretion, boarding of a passen- ger or passengers may be denied in unsafe conditions or circumstances. The CTC ferry does not load or un- load from a stationary dock. Rather, we board and disembark on “floats” which are accessed by ramps, affect- ed by tides. Depending on the tide and weather, boarding the ferry may be dangerous for some passengers, especially at periods of low tide, ice, snow or high winds.
During his tenure as board member and president, Mike led the compa- ny in a number of major initiatives including conversion to a nonprofit, planning for a new ferry to be built, and selling the Pied Pier. In addition to his service to CTC, Mike served the community as a key member of the Fire & Rescue Department—serving as Secretary/ Treasurer at the time of his resig- nation. The CTC Board and employees are very grateful for Mike’s contribu- tion to our company and wish him and Terri all the best in the future! unsafe conditions the captain may refuse to transport all, or certain, passengers, for safety reasons. Ramp access is one consideration. Passengers who require CTC assis- tance with a wheelchair should plan travel around the tides. Travel at half-tide or above. Avoid travel dur- ing bad weather. Please call the CTC office or boat to alert the crew of your travel and arrive no more than 10 minutes before departure so the crew will be available to assist. Wheel- chair access during inclement weath- er or at low tides can be dangerous not only for the passenger but also for our crews. The CTC Board is currently review- ing our operation with a goal of providing more specific and compre- hensive policies and procedures to protect our passengers and employ- ees. These policies will be announced in the near future.

Mike and Terri Conroy moved to Chebeague Island in 2011, having fallen in love with the island when they stayed at the Inn on their hon- eymoon. Mike was an executive with elec- tric and gas utilities for many years and currently works as a business strategy and management consult- ant. Mike joined the CTC Board in April 2012 and was elected Board Presi- dent in July 2014. He served in that role until his resignation in December 2017 when he and Terri moved off the island.

Emergency Preparedness Tips
This new column is intended to offer tips for individuals to implement in their own homes during a power outage or other emergency and will complement an island-wide emergency plan. Tip # 1: Choose a container and a spot for that container with supplies that you have designated for an emergency. What supplies might you need first when the power goes off in the middle of the night? A flashlight or a lantern. What no batteries?
If you can grab that container, the flashlight with extra batteries will be there. (For those of you with cell phones, yes, you canuse themas aflashlight, but many of us remember the difficulties encountered recharging phones after this last storm.) So let’s all get prepared and share those ideas. Send your suggestions to the Council at chebeagueislandcouncil@gmail.com .

FEBRUARY 2018 CHEBEAGUE ISLAND COUNCIL CALENDAR
One Man’s Island by Bob Libby
The Latin word “februum” means purification. February, the second month of the calendar, starts with Candlemas, the feast of presentation at the temple. Coincidentally, it marks the halfway point of winter. This year February is the darkest month with no full moon, but the days are longer and every day the sun disappears farther north along the bay. Gradually, the sunsets we look forward to viewing from the porch start to occur over Cousins Island and creep to the north side of Wyman’s smokestack. Six weeks from now we might be putting the first peas in the garden, watching the first flowers poke stems above the soil, and raking up twigs and needles blown from trees by howling winds. This is the core of winter, but the longer days encourage us and now we feel as though we can make it through. As we have observed before, transportation tests the mettle of island dwellers in the winter. The blizzard and freeze of 2018 reminds us of how dependent we are on the regular ferry service to and from Cousins Island and the mainland. Once again we found ourselves almost captured by ice on the surface between the Stone Wharf and Pogey Shores. All the new crews and pilots had their first experience with floating sheets of ice nearly locking the Islander in its grasp. We were reminded of that week a few Firefighter Footnotes The town is once again issuing burn permits, and they are still available for free through Ralph or Kim Munroe and Lisa Israel or online for a cost of $7 ($2 of which goes to the town) at www.maineburnpermit.com . As quite often happens this time of year, we are experiencing extremely high fire danger days. Please be aware and follow the rules before starting any fires. All fires must be attended at all times and require a burn permit. As we faced the deadline for this essay, the Patriots were hoping for another trip to the Super Bowl. It seems almost an annual ritual for New England’s team, and this year’s AFC championship opponent is one of only three teams that have never been to the big game. At the other end of February, the Red Sox begin the long season down in Fort Meyers and so many of our Chebeague neighbors will send us photos from spring training. The garden catalogs are in mailboxes covered in icicles. In so many ways February provides glimpses of the light at the end of the tunnel: while we shovel or chip, we can smile because we are confident spring will come again. years ago when we watched Lindy, Leon, and Donny go back and forth all night keeping a channel open. Last month we observed the remarkable tribute of full boats and buses carrying friends and relatives to and from Chebeague for Barbara Hamilton’s service. And, of course, we must applaud the dedicated volunteers who provide emergency transportation to all who live here in icy winter. Mainland friends are always amazed when we report that emergency service on the island is as fast and efficient as any rural place in Maine.
