JANUARY 2018 CHEBEAGUE ISLAND COUNCIL CALENDAR
Notes from the Council
The Council has a busy year ahead! As the number of returnable bottles and cans continues to grow, the Chedemption volunteers are always looking for more helpers. Please call Ann Thaxter at 846-3274 if you would like to join the “Baggettes.” Rumor has it they have a lot of fun while doing a ton of work! The Wellness Center programs have been very well received, and we are looking forward to offering even more health-related services this year. Your suggestions are always welcome. Please check out our new feature in the Calendar: a column with tips for handling a power outage or other emergencies. This column is intended to offer tips for people to implement in their own homes and will complement an island-wide emergency plan. It is not too early to start setting aside those gently used items for the thrift shop. Schoolhouse Seconds can provide you a receipt and, like Chedemption,
all the money raised stays here on the Island. Give Christine Auffant a call at 203-675-3983, and she will fill you in on all the details. If you need a break from winter already, start thinking about themes for the Fourth of July Parade. Send us your ideas—the winning idea could earn you a lobster roll! The Calendar will continue to feature island lobster boats on the cover this year. We are very grateful to Cathy MacNeill for donating her beautiful photos, and we thank all our advertisers whose support helps make the Calendar possible. And, please, if you or someone you know needs heating fuel, call Ester at 846-4178 to arrange for fast, free, and anonymous fuel assistance. The Chebeague Island Council is here to help all islanders and to try and make island life just a little easier for everyone. Happy New Year!!

Notes from the Hall
The Foot Doctor The Foot Doctor, Dr. Rybka, is coming to Chebeague on Wednesday, January 3 from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. Thanks to everyone who turned out for the December Community Lunch. We partnered with the CIUMC Food Pantry to raise money for holiday meals. Jen Corson, the new head of the Food Pantry, joined us and talked a bit about food insecurity on the island. You can call Jen with any questions about donations. Remember, donations are needed year-round, not just at the holidays. Speakingof food, theHall ishavingits regular Community Lunch at noon on January 17 and its Second Annual Italian Night to Promote Mental Health Awareness at 5:30 p.m. on January 27 . The Community Lunch will be our ever-popular Thanksgiving in January sponsored as always by Kim Boehm. (Thanks, Kim!) The Italian Night will include comfort food favorites like lasagna, chicken Parmesan, garlic bread, and Gina’s cannoli. (Many thanks to our sponsors Janna Hobbs and Michael Hollander!) It was standing room only last year. So bring your favorite bottle of wine and celebrate family and friendship at the Hall on a frosty winter night. The Hall board is starting work on an emergency- preparedness policies and procedures document. The process will take a while, but we hope eventually to be able to coordinate our efforts with those of other nonprofits and the town. Feel free to offer your suggestions. We are here to serve the community. Don’t forget to thank our amazing cooks and kitchen helpers (in alpha order): Allyson, Binkie, Deb, Dianne, Ester, Gina, Jackie, Janna, Ruth, Sharon, Susie and Wanda. Without their generosity, there would be no Wednesday coffee, soup, and lunch programs. Finally, the Hall and the island lost a good friend in December. Sally Tubbesing devoted countless hours to
helping the Library, the CICC, and the Hall. We have our new keyboard thanks to Sally. How fitting that she has left us all such a lovely musical legacy. Here’s to a healthy and joy-filled new year!
Jen Corson, Head of the CIUMC Food Pantry.
Call 829-6463 for an appointment. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Marty’s Memories: Distant Sounds by Marty Trower
I t’s never the expected but the subtle images, the sounds, and the smells that take you back to amoment that reminds you that you have lived a while and taken it in. I say this because I feel it now and know that it must be the same for others who have spent time on this island. I remember one quintessential incident—just such a small, almost static moment— that has stayed with me. Snow had begun to fall the way it always does, especially in the beginning: silently and subtly. There was a graying sky and a few white motes were bumping into each other, but no boom of thunder, no splatter on the roof and window panes. As I stood outside in the Chebeague schoolyard with the young school children at recess, the flakes began to fall
closer together, coming down faster and starting to fill in the bare brown places. The kids were ramped up, their squeals getting higher as the snow gathered on the plastic slide making the ride down faster and the landing on the ground softer, like falling into whipped cream. I became aware of a distant sound, repeating at regular intervals, almost a blurred hum. It was soothing, and strangely, I seemed to feel its slight vibration in my nose. It was almost a harmonica note, issuing at the same interval of time, always remote, never getting closer. When I realized it was the repetitive bleat of a fuzzy far-off foghorn, I was wrapped in the comfort of knowing exactly where I was, listening to the heartbeat of the island.

CHEBEAGUE TRANSPORTATION COMPANY What’s New at CTC?
In our December 2017 newsletter we explained our 2018 changes to fees and policies. Please review those changes in the newsletter which can be found on the News and Info page of the CTC website— chebeaguetrans.com. While there are pric- ing increases in some categories the major changes are that we will discontinue both the Day Pass program and the Community Log on 1/1/2018. Day Pass tickets that are purchased prior to 1/1/2018 will be hon- ored. The Short Week Com- muter Ticket will also be discontinued. CTC CHANGES IN FEES AND POLICIES If you need to use our chair, please call the office or boat ahead of time and let the crew know - and don’t ar- rive at the boat more than 10 minutes be- fore departure so crew will be available to help. Annual Parking Permits Annual parking passes have been issued for applications received to date. Unfortunately, we were unable to issue passes for the Cousins Island lot to all who applied. Please remem- ber to affix your 2018 permit to your vehicle right away. We added two new em- ployees in 2017. We are pleased to welcome: Evan Winkel who joined us as a deckhand in July. Scott Ehlers who joined us as Cousins Island Parking Lot Attendant in August. WELCOME ABOARD! Employee Birthdays Alan Small —1/8 New Employees in 2017
Clearing Handicapped Park- ing Spaces at our lots Unfortunately we have been unable to find someone to clear handi- capped spaces at our parking lots this year. Our priority is to clear the wharf, ramp, and float. Our employees will focus on this effort. Parking customers who want to have their cars cleaned might want to contact our bus driver, John Wilkinson, who offers this service for a fee at both parking lots. John can be reached at (207)671-8305. -As we told you last year, we se- cured emergency back up services with Maine Maritime Museum when we sold the Pied Piper to the Museum in 2016 and with Casco Bay Lines in 2012. Those back up agreements came in handy when we were using the Piper (now the Merrymeeting) while the Islander was in the boatyard. When the Merrymeeting broke down, Casco Bay Lines did an exceptional job providing “back up to our back up”. The Merrymeeting was taken out of service after the 6:30 PM CTC revenue is on track to exceed 2016 due to higher ferry and park- ing fees. Ferry ridership is ex- pected to surpass 2016 by approxi- mately 1,000 passengers. Some highlights... -We continue to provide free res- cue services to the Town of Chebeague Island. In 2017 we made dozens of patient transports . Many of these occurred off hours - often in the middle of the night. We also provide free transport to the Sheriff’s Department.
ferry on 11/15. The next morning Casco Bay Lines Bay Mist was at the Stone Wharf at 6:30 AM to transport passengers and contin- ued to do so until the Islander came home. Many thanks to both Maine Maritime Museum and Casco Bay Lines for helping us when we needed it! - Safety continued to be a priority In addition to our regular drills, the boat crew met with Safety Works to review safety procedures for our crew while working on the boats. Clearly building a new ferry is our biggest project in 2018. We are looking forward to working with Washburn & Doughty to make this happen. We have spent many hours in an effort to improve on the Islander. In celebration of a successful year, the first person who calls the CTC office on or after 1/1/2018 and says “Can’t wait for the new ferry!” will receive a free guest ticket book. If you believe you have signed up for our cancellation or newsletter email/text service and are not getting notifica- tion, please enroll again. Each time we send out notifi- cations we receive many “undeliverable” notices. Thank you! Cancellation/Newsletter Notices

News from the Chebeague Island Community Association
On November 29, the Chebeague Island Community Association (CICA) held its annual meeting at the school. As usual, most attendees were board members, but we would like to remind you that all year-round and seasonal residents who want Chebeague to remain a vital year-round community are members of CICA. So, if you are interested in anything we are doing, we welcome you to come to a meeting or contact one of our board members to find out more. At the meeting,Viktoria (Vika) Johnson was elected to be the new president, with Beth Howe as secretary and Bob Earnest continuing as treasurer. We all want to thank retiring board members David Whiston and Shannon Adams. The new board members are Diane Lukac and Julia Maine. You probably all know Vika as the newest Town Clerk—a position of great, if quiet, importance to the island. The mother of a child in the Chebeague Island School, Vika is working toward a master’s degree in social work. She has deep family roots on the island, and she and her fiancé look forward to building their life here, so she has a strong interest in the issues central to CICA: supporting the island’s ability to remain a community that provides things like affordable housing, jobs, and a fine education, as well as local food and music that contribute to our lively social lives. CICA’s projects have evolved since its beginnings in the secession movement. An early, large project was the creation of an affordable
Vika Johnson, New CICA President.
duplex for families. This has worked well, but has also convinced us that continuing affordable housing efforts should be smaller in scale and, whenever possible, involve future owners or residents. CICA’s work with the Chebeague Island School has focused on growing food in a school garden and using it in school lunches—both fun and educational projects. A particularly popular aspect of this endeavor has been the outdoor pizza oven behind the school, which CICA built and donated to the school. More recently, with the incorporation of the Free Concert Fund into CICA, we have branched out into providing both professional and home-grown musical performances ranging from jazz to classical to eclectic/ participatory concerts. Last summer CICA sponsored an “Aquaculture Fest,” exploring new ways to build on the island’s long engagement in fishing as an economic activity. So, if any of these projects interest you or you wish to propose a new direction, we invite you to join us as an active, rather than simply a passive, member of CICA. Emergency Preparedness Tips
This new column is intended to offer tips for individuals to implement in their own homes during a power outage or other emergency and will complement an island-wide emergency plan. Tip # 1: Choose a container and a spot for that container with supplies that you have designated for an emergency. What supplies might you need first when the power goes off in the middle of the night? A flashlight or a lantern. What no batteries?
If you can grab that container, the flashlight with extra batteries will be there. (For those of you with cell phones, yes, you canuse themas aflashlight, but many of us remember the difficulties encountered recharging phones after this last storm.) So let’s all get prepared and share those ideas. Send your suggestions to the Council at chebeagueislandcouncil@gmail.com .

Contact Richard Bowen at rhbowen3@gmail.com or 207-831-6148. New Year’s Day 2018 begins with a full Wolf moon. This provides an auspicious background for our New Year’s resolutions. We resolve to be more observant of everything around us. Starting with the generous souls we share this island with and extending to the myriad treasures of nature that surround us, we intend to take careful notice. Becoming more aware of all the gifts that we have in our lives, we resolve to celebrate and show our appreciation for all we discover. We sometimes joke about days in paradise, but it is around us all the time. We celebrated the solstice, and now the days begin to lengthen toward the next growing season. We have gone many years without sharing our home with a dog. Now that Romeo has joined our family, we have added ritual walks around our neighborhood. Being a south Texas dog, Romeo saw his first snow a few weeks ago. He has adapted to the cold, slippery world underfoot. He frequently enjoys sitting on the slope of the fourth green and looking out over the open water toward Littlejohn. Like many of us he seems to prefer bare ground, but clearly accepts whatever weather comes his way. Going to the beaches with Romeo helps us take notice of the manifold beauty around us. We have written before about the special people of our community, and the passing of Sally Tubbesing to the pantheon of other, extraordinarily generous

Sally epitomized those whose magnanimous efforts make our community better. She tirelessly worked to improve life on Chebeague and always greeted every day and every person with a warm smile. It is important every day to let each of our neighbors know how much they mean to us, how much we appreciate their efforts. This January provides a perfect opportunity to measure our resolve. The first and the last day of this month are marked by full moons and supermoons at perigee so extra large and extra bright. Add to that a full lunar eclipse on January 31, and it is a profound celestial frame for measuring our resolutions. We have been fortunate to see many full moons rise huge out of the sea, from Cousins Wharf to East End Beach, Rose Point, and Artists Point. Spectacular huge amber spheres rising from the horizon to melt down to silver coins overhead, this time of year casting long moon shadows from the trees near the shore. Romeo is learning to enjoy his new home, and we are reminded to take no day for granted and loudly express our gratitude for all the generous souls who share our lives. Happy New Year.
