On the Cover The boat on this month’s cover will be familiar to many—the Osprey ! You have probably seen its owner, Stephen Johnson, setting traps or hauling, as he has been lobstering since the early 1960s. A lifelong Chebeague Island resident, Stephen has had at least four boats over his many years of lobstering. His current boat, the Osprey , is a 38-foot Holland with a 370-hp diesel engine and hydraulic hauler. Stephen thinks that although his job is very physically demanding and a big investment, the best part of it is being your own boss. (Photo courtesy of Vika Johnson.) About the Calendar The Calendar is published monthly by the Chebeague Island Council. Available on-line at Chebeague Island News ( www. chebeague.org ) or www.islandcalendar.weebly.com and mailed to every occupied residence on the island, for a small additional fee, it can also be delivered by first-class mail to Island Council members who are off island at the time of publication. The Calendar welcomes submissions from its readers, including letters and thank you notes, but it cannot publish anything that is political in nature, libelous, or obscene. All submissions should include the author’s name and contact information. Without exception, the deadline for submission is noon on the 20 th day of the month preceding publication. Submissions and ad copy may be mailed (P.O. Box 12), left at the Council office (247 South Rd.), or emailed ( chebeagueislandcouncil@gmail.com ) and sent as attachments (.doc; no pdfs) or included in the body of the text. Images and photographs should be sent in a .jpg, .jpeg, or .rtf format. Please do not use the old email address at island.calendar@chebeague.net, as this is an inactive account. As a courtesy and space permitting, island nonprofits are given a free half page each month to publish their news. Any such submissions exceeding a half page will be charged at the usual rate. Notes from the Council

Every summer seems busier and busier! There is something going on almost every day. And with more cars, bikes, joggers, and walkers, we all need to be extra mindful as we enjoy all this activity. Thank you Dr. O’Donnell for another summer of providing medical care! The Wellness Center will continue to have the nurse every other Tuesday.

Dr. Redmond and Dr. Rybka will also be coming as usual. The Flu Clinic is scheduled for October 20, and the foot care nurses will also return in the fall. Thank you to all who helped make Chedemption and Schoolhouse Seconds so successful.

I think the best season on Chebeague is about to start—crisp days, cool nights, and colorful woods!

Below are the remaining Chedemption assignments for the various nonprofits. Please remember to sign up for a shift on behalf of your favorite nonprofit. August 30–September 4 CICA September 6–11 Chebeague & Cumberland Land Trust September 13–18 Chebeague Island Library September 20, 2017–June 18, 2018 “Baggettes” Chedemption Crew Recently, people have been leaving garbage bags full of returnable cans and bottles mixed in with smelly garbage, trash, and single-stream recyclables. Chedemption is run solely by volunteers, and the money earned goes back to island nonprofits. So please take the time to sort your glass and plastic bottles and cans and deposit them in the proper and clearly marked receptacles. Chedemption accepts only returnable 5-cent cans and plastic bottles and 15-cent glass or plastic bottles. All returnables must be marked with a “Maine deposit” label. Any bottles, cans, or plastic drink containers lacking this label should be placed in the large dumpster reserved for recyclable trash.

Carole Fuller has requested that Emery O. Fuller and Alberta Johnson Fuller be buried on Lot #87, whose owner of record was Lewis B. Ross. Should you feel that you have a lineal or collateral claim to the cemetery lot in question, please provide in writing, legal proof of lineal or collateral descent to the Superintendent of the Chebeague Island Cemetery, 192 North Road, Chebeague Island, ME 04017 on or before the 15 th of September, 2017. Upon receipt of the documentation, you will be given the contact information of the applicant and will attempt to agree on the future use of the lot. To resolve the matter, both parties must sign a letter of agreement and submit it to the Town Clerk, who will then approve the request. If no agreement can be reached and both parties have a legal claim to the lot, the Town will not arbitrate and will not issue a burial permit until presented with a legal document resolving the case.

Office Hours— We are open Monday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday. We will be closed September 4 in observance of Labor Day. As always, if you need assistance at other times, please don’t hesitate to call (846-3148) and we will do our best to accommodate your needs. Transfer Station— The Transfer Station is open Monday and Thursday from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.; Wednesday and Friday from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. As always, the Transfer Station is closed on Tuesday and during graveside services at the cemetery. Please remember that this is a pay-as-you-throw facility. We don’t charge for household trash, but we do charge for bulky waste that has to be transported in our construction and demolition containers. Fees are posted at the Transfer Station. The Transfer Station will be open from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Labor Day September 4. New Town Clerk— Please join us in welcoming our new Deputy Town Clerk, Chris Auffant.

Tax Bills— Tax bills were mailed out at the end of August. This is the only bill you will receive for this tax year. Payment of the first half is due on September 29. Note from the Broadband Ad-Hoc Working Group— Please remember to fill out the Broadband Survey ( click here ). You need not answer every question, but in order to address the town’s broadband needs adequately, it is important to gather the most comprehensive data possible. Bicycle Safety— Recently we’ve had some close calls between vehicles and bicyclists and pedestrians on our crowded roads. Please promote bicycle safety by wearing a helmet, riding single file, and riding cautiously, with traffic. Pedestrians, please walk single file, against the traffic. Community Matters: What Draws Us Close

When word spread among the community that SecondWind Farm stand had been robbed and vandalized, people were shocked and outraged. Coupled with the vandalization of the trails behind the Chebeague Recreation Center and, subsequently, the school garden, the news made people wonder what kind of place the island was becoming. That vandalism and theft could happen in this very small town, which people tend to think of as a throwback to simpler times, disrupted their sense of place and security. It made them question whether anything was safe and whether anyone could be trusted. There was much remarking over how awful it all was and how this was not the place they knew or remembered. Only one person not only spoke about how wrong it was, but also moved to right that wrong. Within 24 hours Addie Todd had organized a bake sale to raise money for farm owner Chuck Varney. She arranged to use the Hall, lined up bakers, and even enlisted her younger brother and sister and David Calthorpe to help with sales. The morning of the sale the space outside the Hall was crowded with people dropping off food—beautiful challah, cookies of every description, fudge, and many kinds of pies, including whoopie. One woman dropped off two loaves of banana bread and promptly bought one back. People began buying even before

Addie could price everything and arrange it on plates. There was enough food for all the residents of Chebeague, not to mention Cliff and Long islands. It seemed as though people couldn’t do enough to help. In the end Addie raised over $1800—a staggering sum to Farmer Chuck that left him absolutely overcome. But more than that, Addie gave the community a way to disavow the random violence that had occurred and reaffirm what they felt to be true about their home. Later, in thanking all those who helped her on the Chebeague Island Swap, Sell, or Borrow Facebook page, she was inundated by those who thanked her for “making it happen,” for “bringing us all together as a community,” for her “wonderful community spirit,” and for being so kind and thoughtful. That this healing gesture came from a sophomore at the University of Maine at Orono is all the more telling. We are often quick to condemn the young just for being young and foolish, but we should also celebrate those like Addie who are willing to wade in and try to put things right. So thank you, Addie, for understanding that while people usually know what’s the right thing to do, sometimes they need a little push. As Donna Damon put it, “You rock!”

Marty’s Memories: Night Life by Marty Trower

In my land of memory, night life on Chebeague took on many forms. My earliest memories are not images but sounds of adult storytelling voices, big band music, and show tunes drifting up through the narrow stairwell and heat grate. At sleepovers at Maggie’s, we kids would cuddle up under the slanting ceilings and coax her writer father Jack to make up or continue stories he’d concocted of Princess Rose and her royal family. We would all be part of the story- making process as he would ask us for suggestions, plot twists, and new characters. Later, the big event was always the Saturday night square dances at the Hillcrest Hotel. We started to care what we looked like. Maggie would leave her hair unbraided all day, shaking it out, tossing it back and from side to side while we sailed down Casco Bay in the Islander , the heavy wooden cat boat our families shared. We even started to walk down to the village on rare occasions, but if a car full of boys came by and called out to us, we were terrified and jumped into the bushes and hid. A big change occurred when “The Restaurant” opened at the Stone Pier. There was a long counter, some tables, and a jukebox. Maggie told me she had learned

to drink coffee over the winter. I was stunned. She slid up onto a stool at the counter and announced “I’ll have coffee. Black.” But it was our crush on the same boy—a tall, dark-haired “bad boy”—that tested our loyalty to each other. We were there one evening. Heartthrob Ricky Nelson was singing “Lonesome Town” from the jukebox, our curfew was nearing, and the boy walked slowly over to where we stood quivering and asked Maggie to dance! Blessedly, the song ended seconds before he took her hand and our friendship was saved! There were years of being picked up by our gang and riding around in cars, scooping up others, summer and year-round kids, and starting a bonfire at the shore, and storytelling took on a whole newmeaning. Later, Saturday nights at the Bounty Lounge in the basement of the hotel became the ultimate nighttime experience. Everyone came, every generation swayed or gyrated to the compelling music of Marlene, Med, Gary, and Brother. I remember looking over our table once and seeing my father smiling and appearing to enjoy the loud, raucous music and thinking that was unusual until I saw the white fluff of cotton sticking out of his ears! One Man’s Island By Bob Libby

Q uick quiz for September: howmany islands are in the archipelago that is the town of Chebeague Island? My map shows eight land masses large enough at high tide to grow vegetation. Great Chebeague is the largest, and Goose Nest is the smallest, unless you count the barren ledge to the east of Sunset Landing that never quite submerges. Now, raise your hand if you have ever set foot on each remote island in the town. How many know that Little Chebeague is divided jurisdictionally between Chebeague and Long Island? How many know that Maine Island Trails maintains camping sites on Little Chebeague and Crow islands? Which town hosts the camping site on Little Chebeague? Hope Island has been in the news recently because the Cacoulidis family has put it up for sale. Few Chebeaguers have been on Hope Island in a very long time. Rumors about the extent and quality of the infrastructure there are widespread. Friends of ours who barged dozens of ready-mix cement trucks out there a few years ago have convinced me that the roads on the island are highway quality and better than most others on Casco Bay islands. Those of us who have viewed Hope from boats around its shores are amazed by the many buildings—mansion, barns,

boathouse, and chapel. A good portion of the land mass of Chebeague Island is underwater and controlled by the Maine Marine Resources Commission Most of Chebeague Island’s islands are protected as marine resources. According to reputable climate and oceanographic scientists, Casco Bay is more greatly affected by global climate change than most of rest of the world’s coastal geography. Warm water and acidificationtolerant species are changing the ecological balance that has supported marine harvesting for at least the past millennium. Fortunately, members of our community are dedicated to responding to these changes. For far too long some have treated the ocean as a dumping ground for all manner of waste. We will bear those costs for a long time, and it will take serious innovation to overcome. Finally, I am resolved visit the three small islands on which I have not yet set foot. I issue the following challenge for September: Hike Little Chebeague’s trails that Erno has worked on and view the Surface First Tilts West art installation Send photos of yourself on all the islands of Chebeague and at the highest point in Casco Bay to me on Facebook. I will send you a “Ten Years After” Chebeague Island t-shirt. Get out there!

News from the Chebeague Island School

It seems like Memorial Day was only yesterday, but the new school year started September 5. Summer on Chebeague Island was fantastic but fleeting for sure. We hope everyone was able to enjoy time with family and friends as well as to relax and enjoy all that Maine and Chebeague Island have to offer. What a great place to live! The school did some major cleaning in preparation for the upcoming school year, along with some minor repairing and painting. As most of you know, the School Committee is recommending a school renovation project for our school. A public referendum vote is scheduled for Tuesday November 7 to allow citizens to vote on the proposed project. An open public session will be held before then, so keep your ears open for an announcement of the date and time. Last year was a great year of learning for our students, and many goals were reached. If you have not seen the newsletter, please call the school and we will be sure to get one to you. In closing for this edition, we would like to let everyone know what a pleasure it is to work at the Chebeague Island School, teaching our youngest citizens as they grow and learn. We cannot think of any other school that we would rather be in: it is the greatest! Thank you for allowing us the privilege of working with your children. The goals were to have a steel ferry that would carry at least 121 persons (the original count approved for the Islander); was steel; had a sin- gle engine; had more freight storage; and provided more safety and comfort features. The Board is excited that Washburn & Doughty has presented a plan that meets these needs. The Board is also pleased to be working with a Maine company that will allow easy access during the building process. Below is a preliminary drawing of the new ferry. However, the Board and most commu- nity members felt that the Piper was not a good solution as a back-up ferry to the Islander. In its study, the Board looked at find- ing used ferries that would fit our needs. Despite its own search and en- gaging a broker, no suitable ferries were found. Concurrent with the search for used vessels, the Board developed specifica- tions for a new ferry. It met with two New England boat builders in this pro- cess and determined that Washburn & Doughty proposed the best solution. In 2016 the Board began working close- ly with Washburn & Doughty to design

In 2011 the CTC Board began the pro- cess of evaluating our ferry and back- up ferry and making plans for the fu- ture. The Islander was built in 1985 by Washburn & Doughty in East Boothbay, Maine. At that time the goal was to build a reliable, no frills, work- horse that would transport our custom- ers safely and reliably. And she has met that charge. The Is- lander has safely transported millions of people to and from Cousins Island - rarely having disruptions to service due to mechanical issues. During those 32 years the engine has been rebuilt twice and the company has spent more than her original price on capital improvements (excluding regu- lar annual maintenance costs). In 2002 the Company purchased the Pied Piper as a back-up ferry. We

Has becoming a non-profit corporation helped CTC?

In 2014 CTC converted to a non-profit 501 C (3) corpo- ration. In order to accomplish this CTC had to secure a decision from the IRS that CTC provided a vital public service. Nearly all of our stockholders donated their stock to the non-profit. Without this generosity we nev- er could have converted. The biggest benefit we have realized from this conversion is being able to use funds that would have been spent on taxes for our operating expenses and investments in ferries and buses. Our accountant recently gave us an estimate of how much money we were able to reinvest in the company because we were tax exempt. It is quite a sum! If you would like to win a ferry guest ticket book, give us your guess as to how much we have been able save in taxes since converting to a non-profit. Per the 2008 agreement between the towns of Yarmouth and Chebeague Island, the Yar- mouth Town Council needed to approve the specifications for a new ferry. We are pleased to report that on 8/17/17 the Yarmouth Town Council unanimously approved the specifica- tions for the new CTC ferry!

The Recompense Fund

Thanks to so many enthusiastic volunteers and participants, the August 6 th celebratory Recompense Fund pizza picnic party was a huge success. Representatives from 11 nonprofits received recognition for their partnership

explaining how much the island means to him and why he donates to the Recompense Fund. All nonprofits and island organizations that requested funding received funding: Chebeague & Cumberland Land Trust ($1,000); Island Commons ($7,975), Chebeague Island Community Association ($1,800), Kids’ Place ($14,000), Chebeague Island Historical Society ($3,726), Chebeague Recreation Center ($9,000), Chebeague Island School ($500), Chebeague Island Hall Community Center ($2,945), and LifeFlight Foundation ($1,500). The Recompense Fund Board also announced the recent receipt of an extraordinary $250,000 Challenge Gift from the Raymond Family Foundation (RFF). Over the course of the next four years the RFF will match, dollar for dollar up to their challenge, all contributions to the Recompense Fund. This should allow us to achieve our dual 10-year goals of annual increases in grants to island nonprofits and the creation of a fund to sustain our grant-making capacity well into the future. During the picnic, we were even “buzzed” by one of LifeFlight’s rescue helicopters on a training mission that afternoon, in acknowledgment of a grant to help upgrade their lifesaving service with Chebeague Fire and Rescue. Special recognition was given to our most senior donor—Margaret Gaston at 100— and our most junior donor—Isaac Julien at 27. Margaret Gaston graciously accepted her certificate to the applause of the crowd.
